good thing they have a cult like following, otherwise with these prices I'd think they would have gone bankrupt a long time ago
9/6/2006 11:03:10 AM
^ "these prices" are considerably lower than they've ever been. Your argument may have held up in the past, but it's not very valid any more. Some Apples are still priced at a premium, but the Minis, the MacBooks, and the Pros are competitively prices with their PC equivalents. The MacBook Pros and iMacs are not far behind now.
9/6/2006 11:12:40 AM
That 24inch is pretty sweet. The only thing I have against it is just that it's an all-in-one. That monitor is fantastic and will last a hell of a lot longer than the internals (or, at least, will last beyond the point where I'd want (not need, though) to upgrade). I just wouldn't be able to justify throwing away that monitor just because I wanted to get a next-generation graphics card or something.Good upgrade on their minis, too.

maybe one day all non-audio/video companies will use mac's instead of PC's...but not anytime soon

the price point of the imac isnt that much different from other premium computer makers, like sony with their all in one http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start;sid=HBeCdY3SA7-AIMktMUCIfsLfV420GU1Eo9Y=?CategoryName=cpu_lsseriesdesktops&Dept=computers&INT=sstyle-VAIODesktop-tophero-LS_series

Sony sucks shit and overcharges for it.
9/6/2006 4:22:42 PM
^ agreed...as much as i hate apple, i wouldn't put them on the same crap level as sony
9/6/2006 4:34:55 PM
at least a dell is upgradable... it doesn't appear to be easy to upgrade an imac. price has def. come down.
9/6/2006 4:43:24 PM
it's not that hard to upgrade an imac. I have one and it's been pretty simple. guess it just depends on what you want to do really
9/6/2006 4:50:38 PM
Lucky for apple, the vast majority of consumers will never even try to upgrade a computer. That being sad, macpros, macbooks, and macbook pro's aren't that bad in terms of upgrading ram, the most common kind of upgrade people actually bother with. The only problem with the macpro is extremely tight clustering of the ram modules, which supposedly require the more easily cooled dimms from apple. Anyone know if that's true though? Does the ram really get THAT hot? The macpro's graphics card is also fairly easy to access. The all-in-one systems aren't really targetted at anyone who'd want a system they could upgrade. For the most part they're not targeted at people who even want to open a computer up.[Edited on September 6, 2006 at 4:53 PM. Reason : ]

i would take an apple laptop any fucking day over a sonynow, then , or ever
9/6/2006 6:28:33 PM
i'm not talking about memory, hard drive upgradability, pretty much anybody can do that and those two have come to be expected....in a dell you can also upgrade the psu, cpu, gpu, cdrom, expansion slots, etc.. etc...^^you brought up some good points about the integrated screen, you're pretty much as screwed as a laptop owner when it comes to hardware problems... and with a seperate 24" screen you can keep it for YEARS and use it with future computers.
9/6/2006 6:44:46 PM
that 24" one looks mighty nice, and is priced right toothankfully I don't need a new computer to spend money on

there's a reason why it's considered to be a mid-level consumer machine. you don't get top-of-the line everything. if you want a massive system with a massive graphics card, that's when you'd buy a Mac Pro desktop.

I have to admit that it's a fairly expensive all-in-one and that's a really nice monitor to be saddling with hardware that can't be replaced. That being said, this is a computer that most people would be fine using for 4-5 years for office software, ilife, and web browsing. Does it make sense to spend 2000 bucks for something like that? Well not for me, because I'd never buy an all-in one and I probably wouldn't spend close to that on a pre-built machine. Will it be a hit with some demographic? Apple's betting it will. It does fill a gap between the mac mini and mac pro for those looking for larger screens but not willing to spend 3000+ to get it. Some would argue that plenty of dells, hp's, and alienwares fill that gap too, but we all know that Apple's OS and marketting still seperate it from any of those products in most consumers' minds.

What, do you think I'm comparing an alienware system to an iMac? Are you drunk? With the exception of falcon northwest, each of those companies make and sell high end workstations as well. That's what the macpro is. To that end it's actually price competitive to comparable dells. Nobody buys an iMac to buy games you say? No shit shirlock. They're also not generally $3000. If you had read the thread you'd know that the $3000+ macs refer to the macpros, and the imacs fill a gap between that and the mac mini far below it. [Edited on September 7, 2006 at 3:31 PM. If there's just one thing I hate about that comic, it's the line, "Yep, no thinly-coated subliminal imagery here at all." WTF? Coated, subliminal imagery? Apple's not trying to "trick" you into thinking Macs are young and hip and PCs are old and nerdy; they're pretty much shoving it down your throat. "OMG I just realized that what Apple was trying to do! They were trying to trick us into associating PCs with old, lonely nerds! OMFG I'm smart for discovering that!!"
9/7/2006 5:15:46 PM
I don't think Apple is going to be tricking anybody new at this price-point. I would think the target demographic pays a premium because its an all in one, its aesthetically pleasing, and they think its a status symbol. People buying this probably drop the $2000 without even looking at the specs.

RDRAM!!

Ari has one of those. He was going to break the shit out of it but Lloyd reminded him it was a rental.
