I need one of these for my shitty Compaq, too.
Do they snap on to the bottom or something, or do they have to be size specific to the computer?

not really, you'd basically just lay your laptop on one, as if it were a tray. you'd need to know the width and depth of your laptop to make a good choice about a pad, since they're not manufacturer-specific.
