I have a T-42 and mine did the same thing.. maybe.. 5 months ago
it was under warrenty, so I called IBM, they said the fan was probably dead, I sent it in and got it back maybe 5 days later

^ do that, if you run your laptop w/o a fan, you risk frying it like bacon.

My fiance's laptop had this problem, it was a hard clump of dust stuck in the cpu fan. I just opened up the laptop, and pulled it out. problem solved

The safest thing to do is to just send it off to IBM for repairs. It should only take 4-5 buisness days. If it's less than 3 years old and a T-series it's definately under warranty.
