Why don't we see more of this nowadays? I really miss the style of storytelling, I think stories/movies/etc were a lot more fun when this was the way of doing things.Let me define what "shut the fuck up" storytelling consists of by giving you an example:--"How did Clark Kent rip open his shirt, revealing the Superman symbol like that in public, and nobody saw him?""SHUT THE FUCK UP".--I think over-exaggeration on plausibility and/or realism makes entertainment suck (for the most part, there are some notable counter-examples). Either way, what has rushed us in the "reality" direction so fucking quick? Isn't entertainment supposed to be an escape from life, not a synthetic mini-version of it?

ChknMcFaggot versus Saddamizer
8/30/2006 3:23:42 PM
In other words, ChknMcFaggot LOOOOOOOVVVVVES M. Night Shyamalan.
8/30/2006 3:23:53 PM
And anything with Jet Li in it (wire fights are awesome!).[Edited on August 30, 2006 at 3:25 PM. Reason : *Li* not Lee]
8/30/2006 3:25:04 PM
I don't mean M. Night Shyamalan (I don't really like him), and I don't mean huge plot-holes.I mean the fact that storytelling used to gloss over shit they didn't need to go into. It's almost like the "YEA RITE" crowd of movie-goers has swayed the entire way things are done.
8/30/2006 3:25:54 PM
thats the dumbest synonym for suspension of disbelief ive ever heard
8/30/2006 3:32:22 PM
It's a different shade of suspension of disbelief you fuckin' grandmamost all movies have a degree of that
8/30/2006 3:34:57 PM
Is it a different shade because it only seems to apply to films with secret identities?
8/30/2006 3:40:13 PM
Jesus christ NOit applies to shit where the finer parts are ignored and that's okayExample: old school star wars, the force just "was"new school star wars, they explained it with some midichlorians bullshitits the need for gratuitous amounts of explanation in today's (mainstream) entertainment that's a bit tiresome
8/30/2006 3:54:40 PM
i know what you sayin McFaggot, and i would have to agree
8/30/2006 4:05:55 PM
^^Most people would agree that midichlorians were absolutely unnecessary no matter how you look at it. The concept seriously detracts from the Star Wars mythos, and makes Jedi powers more of a scientific fact than a religious order.I guess the best example of what you're talking about would be Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Well, comic book characters are far more "human" in films than they used to be. They usually have deeper motivations and more complex relationships than they did in the 80's and 90's. If audiences are supposed to take their personal lives seriously, they can't suddenly be expected to revert to the mindset of an adolescent once the costumes are put on.
8/30/2006 4:24:37 PM
It's not even that -- it's just the fact that in storytelling, you used to be able to just start with a bunch of things "given". Now it seems all the origins/reasons for things HAVE to be explained. I guess it does apply more to comic movies where they feel the need to rush out an origin story and a full out explanation for their powers etc
8/30/2006 4:47:13 PM
clearly you never saw x-men 3HOW'D THAT GUY GET FROM WESTCHESTER TO SAN FRAN JUST BY HIS WINGS IN ONE DAYSHUT THE FUCK UPHOW'D THE SUN GO DOWN SO QUICK, ALL THEY DID WAS MOVE A BRIDGE 400 YARDSSHUT THE FUCK UPand so on and so forth

8/31/2006 1:16:22 AM
yea, because there are no crazy flying around wire fights in once upon in china 1,2,3,4,5 i dont know how many they made, but it was a lot
8/31/2006 1:18:22 AM
sorry I'm not a conosseuir of Jet Li... my point was against martial arts sequences with ridiculous use of wires. good martial arts is impressive enough without them. Jet Li just immediately jumped to mind. Kind of like John Woo jumps to mind with overuse of the cliche action sequence switching into slow motion.
8/31/2006 10:05:57 AM
i disagree. i would prefer crazy wire flying as opposed to more 'realistic' martial arts. the once upon a time in china series, iron monkey, etc are favorites of mine.
8/31/2006 10:10:06 AM
Crouching Tiger was the shit when it came out.
8/31/2006 10:38:38 AM
8/31/2006 11:48:23 AM
actually id say most of his newer movies barely have any of that shit in them at all compared to his old ones.
8/31/2006 12:29:58 PM
eh i dont know about that. I havent seen his most recent one being released or 'Unleashed'.But Hero, Romeo Must Die, The One were all very heavy with wires. Kiss of the Dragon didnt have too much in the way of wire fights though.
8/31/2006 12:47:15 PM
8/31/2006 2:38:37 PM
IT'S NOT JUST SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF YOU FUCKING GRANDMAhow many times do i have to explain itit's not just that you have to sit back and swallow some jagged pills during the movieit's that they gloss over otherwise major details because it doesn't fucking matter all that muchit's that people nowadays want a full fucking expositionit's a little different than suspension of disbelief -- it's that they make dramatic irony VERY obvious to the viewer and it doesnt fucking matter
8/31/2006 2:46:59 PM
DAMMIT YOU FUCKING GRANDMAS
8/31/2006 3:25:37 PM
8/31/2006 3:30:57 PM
Why must we set limits to our escapism? Does that not defeat the purpose of escaping? Maybe it does to a degree, but on the flip side, it can also enrich the purpose of escaping itself, by blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.I view it as a balance, and that balance, depending on the audience, will continue to morph over time.Snakes on a motherfucking plane.
8/31/2006 3:38:31 PM
If Snakes on a Plane started with the snakes being on the plane with NO explanation, it would be an example of what I'm trying to talk about
8/31/2006 4:38:29 PM
the matrix movies

^^ Yeah sure, Godzilla for the most part. There's an explanation of him that's important to the whole allegory of the tale, but its not some drawn out bullshit like you'd see in a movie today.
