Hockey people are constantly talking about the hockey gods.I never hear about football, baseball, or basketball gods.Do I just not watch enough football/baseball/basketball, or is it just a nomenclature thing (gods vs. ghosts vs. demons vs. whatever)?

I wonder if a newer NHL fanbase that doesn't have the pleasure of having Chuck Kaiton are as aware of Hockey Gods.[Edited on August 30, 2006 at 9:59 AM. Reason : .]

the hockey gods wiped out the other gods in an epic battle circa the original six era

the hockey gods are obviously the most powerful.i think in general there's a lot more superstition with hockey. well a little more than baseball, and a lot more than football/basketball.[Edited on August 30, 2006 at 2:21 PM. Reason : *]

I hear baseball gods more than hockey gods, Don't think I have ever heard someone say golf gods. And I think I have actually heard football or basketball gods on a commercial once. There are no curling gods, it is a godless sport.

When a hockey team wins their conference they won't even touch the trophy because they don't want to jinx their chances at the Stanley Cup. That's way more hardcore than rally caps.

the answer is; in hockey, one goal is worth a lot. games used to be very low scoring. so, a weird puck bounce, a truly random event, can easily decide a game. becuase of the huge role of chance, relative to other sports, you get the 'hockey gods'.

George Hainswourth had 22 shutouts in 44 games. Then again, no one was allowed to pass the puck forward.

"In the 1940-41 season, the mortgage on their arena, Madison Square Garden, the current edition of which had been built in 1925, was paid off. The management of the Madison Square Garden Corporation burned the mortgage in the bowl of the Cup. This led some hockey fans to believe that the Cup, which is regarded almost as a sacred object, had been "desecrated", leading the "hockey gods" to place a curse on the Rangers."[Edited on November 6, 2006 at 10:54 AM.
