I'm sure the other coop offices at other universities don't force their students to hold their fucking hands. Shouldn't the $400 coop fee pay for our release? I honestly have no problem with writing the report. But is it necessary that my CHE advisor read it, then sign it? Why the fuck should he be included in the completion of my term? He has no purpose to me other than giving me my PIN for registration. Secondly, why do I have to have a post-work appointment to DISCUSS the work report? What's to discuss? It's all included in the report, Goddamnit. And what the hell do I have to discuss during a pre-work appointment? Does the office what to wish me a fucking farewell before I leave? I haven't been in Raleigh all year, and I had to do all this correspondence shit long distance. Fax the report to my advisor. Wait for him to fax it to the coop office. Set up an appointment over the phone to discuss the work report before I can get my grade. Miss the phone appointment and call the office to schedule a new phone appointment. Fuck the coop office.

the more red tape you go throughthe better the co-op program looks to the world outside the university
8/28/2006 8:03:05 PM
How does being smothered look better to other places? Do they even know how our program rolls? All they'll see are the words "Cooperative Education". [Edited on August 28, 2006 at 8:10 PM. Reason : ]

search - everyone else hates it too pretty much
8/28/2006 8:16:41 PM
if the co-op office makes you do all that stuff then it means that they can brag about having a bunch of responsible and organized students in their program who profit greatly because they are in such an awesome co-op programit's just like any other group/program/department on campus
8/28/2006 8:19:20 PM
you have the red tape because it is an accredited programyou reap the benefits because that work counts towards your PE regardless when it occurred and shit like that
8/28/2006 8:42:55 PM
so do you think it is...
8/28/2006 8:53:31 PM
State's program isn't actually that much of a hassle compared to others. When I used to co-op I worked with quite a few people from Penn State. Their work reports had to be eight pages (versus our two) and the manager had to read and sign off on their report. I assume that was in addition to having school advisors reading over it as well.
8/28/2006 8:55:52 PM
i take it you're thrilled with the new co-op mentor/big brother bullshit program?
8/28/2006 8:58:23 PM
^My person never contacted me last semester when this shit started. At least I don't have to meet with the guy. Email is all that is requested. ^^^No, I dont hate the program, just all the bullshit that goes on at the office. ^^^^I'm pretty sure coop ed at other schools counts as a year towards their PE, and all they have to do is pay a flat fee, peace out, and come back with no bullshit. But I'm picking up what you guys are putting down. I just hate doing all this shit long distance because you have to wait on someone in the chain to get something done. JUST GIVE ME MY FUCKING CREDITLESS "S" ALREADY!!![Edited on August 28, 2006 at 9:05 PM. Reason : ]

I remember when I was started a coop I had found on my own two summers ago. I was in shock at all the bs the coop office wanted me to do and the money they wanted me to pay. I kept grilling the woman that was giving the presentation about why the fuck we need to actually sign up for the class especially just for a summer coop and I ended up taking a full course load in the fall so I didn't have to pay them a dime.
8/28/2006 9:23:33 PM
Your upset because you are enrolled in a program which gives you the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience and an outstanding pay rate? Just because you have to fill out some paperwork and pay a one-time fee that's probably less than a single week's pay?I'm not saying I agree with the paperwork or the hefy fee, but your bitching is unjustified. Either move on with life or start a serious student movement to change the way the coop office is run.[Edited on August 28, 2006 at 10:24 PM. Reason : .]

^If you actually read and understood my post, you'd see where I said I had no problem with writing the report. Also, where the hell in any of my posts was I actually complaining about the coop fee? Perhaps "Shouldn't the $400 coop fee pay for our release?" could be misconstrued as such, but it wasn't a complaint. I have no problem with the coop experience whatsoever; I'm working with a great company (DuPont) and getting paid a good rate. I really don't even have a problem with the coop office. As I've said, it's just been a hassle at the end of my last term to get all the requirements done for the "S" because I've been out of Raleigh for the past year, and can't hop from one building to the next. Thus the pointless bitching. People come on here and bitch all the time; do they have to start a rally to follow it up?
8/29/2006 9:23:37 AM
Of all the problems one could point out with NC StateI hardly think Coop is one of the top five.
8/29/2006 9:58:47 AM
I would have to agree with you and your ranking.
8/29/2006 10:26:46 AM
I can hardly imagine whining about writing a few pages, and having to do some procedural non-sense. I'm more than grateful for the co-op office, hell they found me a job, a real good one, and i'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten it without them.
8/30/2006 10:57:11 AM
Yeah, but what if you already have a job and just needed full time status?
8/30/2006 11:53:58 AM
I have heard of people convincing their employer to speak with the co-op office and arranging the work that they are doing into a "co-op" through the school.

I found the co-op office quite helpful, it scored me an interview I'd never get otherwise, and eventually led to my full-time job now that I've graduated. No complaints here, obviously.

its all a scam, so then they can pay their employees to work at the coop office, so when the head people come in they dont get pissed that they are doing nothing and getting payed for doing jack. i to go to a meeting (waste of time), then go to another meeting (waste more time), then go to coop advisor, then do a report, and then a post report. All that was needed is NONE OF THE ABOVE!
9/5/2006 3:25:01 PM
im disappointed with our coop program as far as opportunities for business majors...
11/6/2006 1:08:01 PM
I have realized the error of this thread. If anything, writing a report after the completion of a work term is moreso for our enrichment than for the coop office giving us mundane tasks. Discussing the work report with our advisor and coop administrator shows them we did SOMETHING during our semester away from school. The coop office is not at all useless and not out to make money from our ambition to gain work experience. Besides, I was able to use my work report from my spring term as a writing sample for a summer internship application with ExxonMobil. GG COOP OFFICEP.S. I'm thinking about becoming a Coop Ambassador to help spread the word of the gloriousness that is Cooperative Education to the freshmen and sophomores.
11/6/2006 1:31:33 PM
After I did my first co-op rotation, i eliminated the co-op office from my subsequent co-ops. Fuck the $400 fee that got me NOTHING. I didn't live in the dorms, so i didn't need the 0 credit class or whatever to keep my status full time. As far as NCSU knew, i just kept taking every other semester off. So i didn't get the little co-op sticker on my diploma or whatever you get, i still got a full-time job with the company i co-oped with, and saved a couple grand in co-op fees.
11/6/2006 1:56:13 PM
its not that i dont like the office or the program, just the amount of opportunities is lacking in business (for my concentration atleast)...
11/6/2006 2:07:32 PM
Just curious, what happens when you aren't kept in the system as a full-time student? Why is "staying full-time" a necessity?
11/6/2006 2:18:34 PM
It lets you stay on your parent's insurance and I think some other things scholarships? require full time status.[Edited on November 6, 2006 at 2:36 PM. Reason : ]

My insurance company requires proof of enrollment when I have all new doctors appointments. And since I have a new doctor just about every month now I am glad that I am cooping and have that insurance. Also if you sign up for classes and then drop them all, you are no longer considered a student and you would have to reapply to go back to school. Plus you can't drop all of your classes without permission from student health (only for health problems).

I had a summer session where I took one class and I eventually decided to drop it.Technically since I was dropping all my classes they made me go to student health.Student health was familiar with the red tape and were more than happy to sign off on me dropping all 1 of my summer classes.

if you do coop, youre still a full time student and still get to use the gym and go to games and whatnot...

Coop office is full of clowns...they are just trying to save their jobs by making themselves busy...kids find their own coop jobs, pay coop fees and go through all red tape for no reason....
