Amato's club is 12-11 overall and 6-10 in ACC play the past two seasons. The quarterback situation has been in shambles since Philip Rivers' departure, and there appears to be no solution in sight. When the headliner on offense is a center (Leroy Harris), personnel issues obviously exist. Promising for Amato is a relatively gentle nonconference slate that includes games vs. Appalachian State, Akron, Southern Miss and East Carolina. While that improves the team's bowl outlook, there is no avoiding a nine-game, 10-week ACC grind that begins with consecutive home games vs. Boston College and Florida State and ends with consecutive road trips to Clemson and North Carolina. With 12 starters gone from last season's seven-win team, including first-round draft picks Mario Williams (Texans), Manny Lawson (49ers) and John McCargo (Bills), the outlook for the Wolfpack is bleak. In fact, a fifth-place finish in the ACC Atlantic division is quite possible -- and that would get Amato fired. Job saver: An eight-win season, with a road victory at Clemson or North Carolina in November. 2. Lloyd Carr, Michigan Carr has done a lot of winning in his 11 seasons as the Wolverines head coach. His overall record is an impressive 102-34, and his teams have won five Big 10 championships and one national championship. Unfortunately, Carr is a victim of college football's "what have you done for me lately" syndrome. The 1997 national championship is a distant memory, and fans are fuming following a five-loss season in 2005. Most importantly, after winning five of his first six meetings vs. rival Ohio State, Carr's teams have lost four of the last five dating back to Jim Tressel's arrival in Columbus. Let's face it: The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry defines coaches' careers. John Cooper was 111-43-4 overall as the Buckeyes head coach but his 2-10-1 record against the Wolverines got him fired after the 2000 season. The standard is no different in Ann Arbor. Carr obviously recognizes the situation. He voluntarily made staff changes that included fresh blood at both the offensive and defensive coordinator positions. Also, the offseason conditioning program was more intense than ever with many key players dropping 10-plus pounds in order to improve the team's overall speed. The good news for Carr is that he still has a chance to coach his way out of this mess. The Wolverines enter the 2006 season with a lot more depth after suffering through an injury-riddled campaign a year ago, and they have enough talent to remain in the Big 10 title hunt come late-November. Job saver: Beat Ohio State en-route to a Big 10 title. 3. Larry Coker, Miami (Florida) Success breeds expectations, and Coker knew that when he took over as Miami's head coach, expectations in Coral Gables would be ridiculously high. Sure, the Hurricanes have won 53 of 62 games played during Coker's watch. But six of those nine losses have come in the past two seasons, and fans had an entire offseason to stew over an embarrassing 40-3 Peach Bowl blowout at the hands of LSU. Inconsistent play on the field has led to understandable scrutiny. Last season, for example, the Hurricanes proved they had elite talent when they blew the doors off a previously undefeated Virginia Tech team in Blacksburg. But just two weeks later a clearly uninspired Canes squad was upset by an inferior Georgia Tech opponent -- in the Orange Bowl, nonetheless. An increase in off-the-field issues only has compounded matters. Most recently, Coker announced a one-game suspension for running back Tyrone Moss and a two-game suspension of wide receiver Ryan Moore. That means two of Miami's top offensive players will miss the all-important opener vs. Florida State. In an effort to right the ship, Coker overhauled his staff in the offseason, hiring six new assistants. The shakeup is designed to get the players' attention from a disciplinary standpoint, as well as to restore the bluster offensively after last year's unit ranked 73rd nationally in scoring offense. Only time will tell regarding the effectiveness of the coaching adjustments, but a win over the Seminoles on Sept. 4 sure would loosen the noose around Coker's neck. Job saver: Win the ACC title. 4. Dennis Franchione, Texas A&M Scott Quintard/Icon SMI An improved defense might help save Dennis Franchione's job at Texas A&M.Texas A&M is 16-19 in three seasons under Franchione's watch. Not exactly the results locals in College Station were expecting when Franchione was pried away from Alabama to take over for R.C. Slocum, who stepped down after 14 seasons in command. The biggest problem area during Franchione's three-year tenure has been the defense, which is surrendering an average of 31.4 points per game. Like all head coaches feeling the heat, Franchione made coaching changes on that side of the ball. Three new defensive coaches were hired, including new coordinator Gary Darnell, who is implementing a 4-2-5 scheme in an attempt to better contend with the widely popular spread offenses in the Big 12. An improved defense and solid play from first-year quarterback Stephen McGee will be vital to Texas A&M's success in 2006. The good news is that the Aggies have an undemanding nonconference schedule, which includes four home games vs. The Citadel, Louisiana-Lafayette, Army and Louisiana Tech to open the season. With that in mind, Franchione's team has an excellent chance to rebound from last year's losing record -- its second in three seasons under his guidance. Job saver: A nine-win season and a respectable bowl appearance. 5. Phil Fulmer, Tennessee Fulmer's credentials are exceptional. Over the last 10 years under Fulmer, Tennessee is the winningest team in the SEC with a 95-30 mark. His teams have won the SEC East six times, including a pair of outright SEC titles and a national championship in 1998. However, as is the case at all major football factories, one dismal season makes the natives restless. The Vols' 5-6 record in 2005 was made even worse by the fact that they were ranked as high as No. 3 in preseason polls. It also was the first time since 1988 that the team failed to appear in a bowl. In an attempt to spice things up offensively, Fulmer made the well-publicized decision to hire David Cutcliffe for a second go-around as Tennessee's offensive coordinator. Cutcliffe has a great résumé with quarterbacks (see Peyton and Eli Manning), so he is expected to cultivate the talented but inconsistent junior Erik Ainge. Off-the-field issues are only making matters worse. Over the course of the last eight months, the Vols have had eight players either arrested or cited for incidents spanning aggravated assault to underage drinking. Every program has its character issues. However, when they are combined with on-the-field failure, a lack of discipline becomes the perception. There is no question that Fulmer has enough talented players and bright coaches to circle the wagons this fall. It won't take an SEC title to save his job but returning to the postseason with a respectable bowl bid is expected. One losing season in Knoxville was tough to endure. Two in a row could cost Fulmer his job. Job saver: Finish in the top two in the SEC East. Others on the hot seat Art Briles, Houston Fisher DeBerry, Air Force Greg Robinson, Syracuse John L.
