the only place that offers free checking for students is wachovia.I have SECU and love them, but i think they charge like 1 buck a month, which goes to support the scholarships they give out

I have a Bank of America Student Checking Account and I like it a lot. They charge a monthly fee if you dont have a direct deposit every month or if your parenst arent members but I told them I wasnt going to have direct deposit but would be working and they waived it for me. You just have to ask. Their on-line banking is awesome. I had previously had Wachovia. They never did me terribly wrong but I much prefer Bank of America.

ill have small direct deposits each month from roommates for bills etc, do they have a minimum at BoA to keep the checking 'free'

you're former CSC, you should know the definition of redirection. now take that, and understand that it's not what i want here. thanks though.

i recommend BB&T. have had my checking account with them since like sophomore year or HS and haven't had any problems.Don't make any interest, but there isn't any fee.
8/19/2006 5:50:49 PM
sounds good thx for the input. anybody else?
8/19/2006 6:14:18 PM
I have wachovia, BBT, and SECUno problems with any of them
8/19/2006 6:29:04 PM
SECU if at all possible
8/19/2006 6:39:50 PM
8/19/2006 6:39:55 PM
SECU if you can get an account there(I had BB&T for about 8 years till they pissed me off)no issues with SECU yet, and ive been there around a year
8/19/2006 7:00:51 PM
BB&T has been great so far.
8/19/2006 7:05:24 PM
First Citizens has a free student account. There is one at the corner of Avent Ferry and Western Blvd for convenient access.
8/19/2006 7:11:06 PM
state employees' credit union
8/19/2006 7:13:25 PM
Wachovia is great for me. And you can link ATM services to your student ID so you don't have to carry your card in case a need for cash arises, which is NOT a good idea.
8/19/2006 7:55:08 PM
Another vote for SECU. If you have a paystub from NCSU or the state government, or a family member with an account, you can open account there. As aforementioned it's $1 a month but if you keep any money in there at all it the .75% will make itself up for you. No charge to deal with an ATM (across from Nelson, in the library, Mission Valley etc) either.

8/19/2006 8:49:41 PM
SECU is good though, you can use all CashPoints machines and they're EVERYWHERE!
8/19/2006 8:55:51 PM
BB&T since I could open a student account (~6 years), and never a problem or extra charge.
8/19/2006 10:20:02 PM
open a simple checking account at bank of america. there is no service fee, and we both get $25 if you identify me as a referral.
8/19/2006 10:40:28 PM
so i didn't recognize the difference between a deposit and a direct deposit. stop bein a pecker Omar, you're not helping anybody... you've been like that to bout everybody lately apparently
8/19/2006 10:44:41 PM
you should be checking deez
8/19/2006 10:53:24 PM
I shut down my BB&T account because you could only visit the ATM 5 times, write 10 checks, and talk to customer service one time per billing cycle. Anything over was a $1 or $2 charge and I was never notified of it when I opened the account while in high school.

SECU also has a nice free change counter
8/20/2006 1:12:38 AM
oh my mistake OmarBadu CORRECTION: YOU'RE STILL A USELESS TROLLi'm likin the sound of SECU except the charges. i swore off wachovia last year after some fun times with them.that location of First Citizens that Patman mentioned would be really nice, does anyone else have any experience with them?
8/20/2006 1:30:53 AM
8/20/2006 1:58:44 AM
when i graduate CSC i hope i'm not like either of you.
8/20/2006 2:03:57 AM
You mean employed and successful?
8/20/2006 2:05:21 AM
successfully a jerk.being employed is not hard. i've worked plenty, as a matter of fact there's a good chance i've done a heck of a lot more work than you. i need some temporary work for a little extra cash while i'm here at school so that i can still have some free time and some good studying time. piss off.
8/20/2006 2:07:00 AM
If you've worked plenty you would know what the difference between a deposit and direct deposit is.BB&T gets my nod too, I don't know what kind of shit bethaleigh is talking about. Not that I or anyone ever writes more than 10 checks a month, or needs to talk to a customer rep more than once a month. No idea on the ATM thing, but I definitely haven't been charged for that in the 9 years I've been with them. And BTW, every bank has similar restrictions in their "free" checking accounts.

8/20/2006 3:21:56 AM
bank of america, hands down. their online banking is awesome. Credit and Debit transcations are showed pending immediately and are subtracted from your available balance right then and there; you can also receive your bills through their online banking; ability to transfer funds to an outside bank electronically and transfer funds electronically to other BoA customers. The online banking experience is great and I've never had a problem with BoA. I have heard alot of people complain about overdraft fees and such, but wtf..keep track of your damn money biotch and you wont get overdraft fees..jesus fucking christ mary magdalene
8/20/2006 8:10:36 AM
another vote for SECU.
8/20/2006 8:32:49 AM
I just opened a BB&T student account, and they just came out with a BB&T "student free" account where there is no minimum balance, and they don't charge anymore for over 10 checks, its unlimited. They also gave me this card that I can use to get one fee back (like if I screw up and spend more than I got in the account), and they won't give me a hard time about it. I think if you go to the one across from the old Darryl's, they will put $25 in your account to start it, but I am not sure. Anyways, seemed like the best deal to me...
8/20/2006 9:00:29 AM
Bank of America finally is offering free checking for studens. I'll vouch for their online/BillPay system, and their customer service. However, they are HORRIBLE when it comes to fees ... just a warning. Also, it doesn't hurt to open more than one bank account. You can use one to track school expenses and the other for personal spending/etc.
8/20/2006 9:11:46 AM
are you all saying every job in the world uses direct deposit, or at least has the option?
8/20/2006 9:54:44 AM
SECU
8/20/2006 10:51:46 AM
8/20/2006 12:46:00 PM
^ People still use paper checks wtf? Oh and by the way the bank doesn't have to tell you about charges it's your JOB to do a bit of research and/or read the user agreement before you open/use an account.[Edited on August 20, 2006 at 1:21 PM. Reason : .]
8/20/2006 1:18:14 PM
I read the agreement, it was not in there. He handed me a new brochure and it was in that one. I went home and got all my initial info and went back and showed him the difference and he refunded all my fees but I still closed the accounts. And yes, plenty of places have to option to get a paper check and other places don't have the option for direct deposit. It depends on the employer.
8/20/2006 1:32:28 PM
i have no complaints at first citizens btw
8/20/2006 1:40:55 PM
^^ I mean't people still use paper checks to pay for shit
8/20/2006 2:02:36 PM
^Well then, yes, people do.
