UAB has been seriously lacking in the past 4 years...and it's not for lack of money. They have shitons of money to throw these events and yet they continually book shitty acts. Back in 2000 they had Tonic and Jump, I remember that. Why can't they book some awesome regional bands to come play for these big events? The carnival food is a step in the right direction, though. And UAB has brought some good bands, but never ever for the big events. It's always some random show during the middle of the semester and hardley anyone knows about it. You people have GOT to manage your public image better...you're blowing the big events and have been for years.PS: Dimitri Martin was the best idea UAB ever had.[Edited on August 23, 2006 at 4:15 PM. the UAB should gets wolves din to book their shows.for real.
8/23/2006 4:27:27 PM
^ agreed
8/23/2006 7:02:44 PM
if people want the wolves din to choose uab's entertainment and they want uab to do more showswhy doesn't someone from wolves din run on the platform that they will only do big events (and the movies)?let the student body vote on it. if that's what wins, then those behind the wolves din will have a couple hundred grand to play around with on behalf of students.
8/23/2006 9:37:59 PM
I dont remember seeing the UAB logo before, but it really sucks.

You guys have no idea how much money these "big acts" cost do you? All American Rejects $25-50 KRascal Flats $300 KSugarland $100 KBlack Eye Peas $75 KJohn Meyer $100 KFive for Fighting $50 KJessica Simpson $150 KThe Fray $30 KSnow Patrol $40-50 KKean $50 KGoo Goo Dolls $100 KOutkast $125 KThat is just the artist fee which goes up each day. Production costs for any one of these would add 20-30 K then advertising would cose 5-10 K. So the minimum cost for All American Reject would be 50 K. Which is way out of the range of the UAB programming budget. If you want big names the UAB will have to have a significant fee increase, which they have not seen for 30 years.30 years ago the UAB was able to bring Ray Charles for $7500.00 all inclusive.

Can I just say, if you aren't a student anymore, and you still complain about the UAB. Guess what: You don't pay student fees anymore, so bye. And if you do pay student fees, and still don't like it, don't complain on the wolf web, go to a UAB meeting and get involved. Plan an event all your own that you think is worthy. Then you can come talk to me.
9/12/2006 9:55:25 PM
i see no reason why they shouldn't complain if they have a reason to. the uab is entrusted to provide quality programming for the campus.the whole way it's structured is that there is only one elected position - there are others approved by a body which has only a minority chosen by the student body.if a group that is not chosen by students (and is hardly accountable) is acting in a manner that is unpopular, it makes sense that an effective means of changing the group would be public pressure and attention.

The UAB lost a lot of money bringing De La Soul, etc. in 2001. There was a bad turnout because it was the last year that people still tried to gather on Brent Road. Lack of interest turns into less money and weaker lineups each year I guess.
