1997 Nissan 240sxSo after a normal drive on a highway, according to my ECU which is displaying a CEL, my TPS [throttle position sensor] is messing up. I am going to get autozone to clear my codes in the morning and see if any CELs pop back up. I just wanted to know how critical it is to get the TPS working correctly, as I was hoping to be able to drive back to State on Saturday (as opposed to walking from Charlotte). I have heard that if the sensor messes up it can prevent the vehicle from exceeding 3000rpm - which would kinda suck, but at the moment the car seems to be driving alright. If the CEL does show back up;I have read the service manual and will go through the sensor with a voltmeter, and worst case buy a new TPS.I don't know how anyone would be able to help me, but maybe you guys have suggestions as to what the problem might be, or if anyone has had similar problems. Thanks

the one in my dads ranger went bad 3 times... i can make the vehicle run like complete ass on a ranger but i don't know about a 240

I dunno about on a 240, but on an rx-7 you test the resistance on the TPS and use an adjuster screw (sets the tension on this pushrod thing) to get it set right, assuming it is in spec properly. The TPS is going to be used to determine acceleration enrichments for example. It will most likely make the ECU dump fuel into the car if it's screwed up.I bet you can find more info in a Haynes manual or like a pdf of the factory service manual. First see if it is in spec or not.

Well the CEL went off for some reason without having to clear it.Also I started the car with the TPS unplugged and it idled like crap, then plugged it back in and it ran fine...so I guess that means it works. (I looked in the FSM and did what it said to check voltage and I didn't get any readings so I gave up with that)

Check the TPS reports.

I figured out the problem. It was my denim shiftboot

Try checking the voltages again. That is the only way you will know it is working I think. There is more info on the 240sx.org FAQ:http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.html

It's working fine for me now, I might check the voltages again before I leave.
