My old Cobra ESD-9210 finally crapped out, and now I'm looking for a new detector.

I'm not looking to spend $400+ on a V1 or even $200+ for a passport. Those are nice detectors and all, but I am more of a 10-15 mph over driver, so I looking for something in the $150 range. Any suggestions?

How bout dont speed? 10-15 isnt going to get you anywhere faster than 0-9, the sooner you realize this the sooner you realize that wasting money on stupid shit such as radar dectors can be better spent elsewhere.

V1 or Passport 8500 X50 if you're serious.

people rarely speed becaue they are in the hurry. it is because it is unbearable to drive the stupid fucking speed limit in this country.

my thoughts are that if you're going to speed enough to justify using a RADAR detector, you're putting some degree of trust in the device, so you should get a good one that will do the job well (i.e., V1, passport 8500, or that other fairly new one that's similar to the 8500).

you don't need a detector for 10 over, and you're probably ok most of the time at 15 over on the interstate (and lots of times around town, too). i'd either just keep it within 10 over (unless in fast interstate traffic), or i'd buy a good detector.

I just consider my tickets the premium I pay for the right to drive as fast as I want, but I'm 24 and still drive a car my parents pay for so I don't care about my insurance.

1) I used the search function and didn't come up with anything useful. Thus, I decided to start this thread.

2) I know I'm usually ok at 10-15 over, but the real problem comes when I am doing 80 in a 70 and don't feel like slowing down when the speed limit drops to 60. 20 over is a bitch of a ticket, especially if you get it in SC.

I was perfectly happy with the crappy Cobra I had before...it gave me adequate (but not great) protection at a more than reasonable price. I just can't see myself shelling out $200+ for a radar detector.

(don't mean to hijack the thread) What's with all the camera's on the beltline/I-40 between the Hammond rd and Gorman st? They keep setting my detector off like crazy (k band ). The cameras are behind signs, on the poles of the huge interstate signs... everywhere in that area... I guess just for traffic flow monitoring?

man, i can't figure out how in the hell used Valentine 1s go for such high prices on eBay. the latest models routinely are listed for more than they sell for brand new, and they typically sell for pretty much list price.

its a strong market for them, and people (fools) ignore the old "caveat emptor". either find someone local selling a nearly new one for a good price OR buy direct from Valentine.

yeah, i'm not about to buy a used one over the internet for $375 when i can get a new one from the manufacturer for $399. i can't imagine how that is the market price for them.

76 in a 55 will cost you $390 with Lawer fees. Its hard as hell to get it dismissed in Wake county these days. Food for thought

Mine helped me when I was cruising around 82 MPH at 5:30 a.m. on the way to Wilmington a few weeks ago. Started getting some K band beeps, let off the cruise control, and a Volvo SUV that had been behind me blew by. There was a HP officer in the median a little ways up the road and the Volvo got pulled.

That was worth the $215 I paid for my Passport 8500 right there and I've had this thing for around 4 years now.

I've got a whistler, 1743 I think, and I was driving the other day down a straight stretch of 64 going towards the OBX and just as soon as the Ka Band went off, before I could even see anyone coming, I put on brakes and slowed down to the speed limit, but a trooper riding the other way pulled me and said he got me doing 80.

Moral of the story - Radar detectors don't always work, therefore I am in deep shit. If you're gonna trust one, at least get a really good one. No cheap shit.

v1.8

Quote :
"1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.8. This is our latest and best performer on both radar and laser with just one exception—it lacks POP Protection. Of interest to those who drive in Europe, the latest V1 version also has a Euro Mode.

Upgrade Recommendation: You have a sophisticated security system, and we’re cautious about recommending an Upgrade. If you believe in keeping up with technology, particularly if the POP Mode is being used in your area, then go ahead. V1’s approach to the POP problem is superior to all others in the industry. If you drive in Europe, you will appreciate our new Euro Mode which improves protection on photo radar as it is used in the E.U. "

[Edited on October 18, 2006 at 1:19 PM. Reason : its $75 for me to upgrade, but i dont see why i would need to at this point]

I look at it this way, if a 250 dollar escort saves you even one ticket, its already paid for itself. That's how expensive tickets are these days.

^^mine has POP mode and its never popped that i'm aware of in the three years i've had it. I'm pretty sure i've read that itll read POP (like it does on power on) when it detects a POP on.. but if if not maybe i am utilizing the function and don't know it.

I bought a K40, not a well known brand but really good radar/laser detectors. It actually saved me tonight as I was doing 70 in a 55. Cop was hiding in the median with no lights on, I picked up his radar about 1/2 mile away from him. Great detector with all the bells and whistles, and has a great filter too.

i might sell my V1.. its a 1.9 w/ POP. still have the box, reciepts, all accessories..

I think the new E30 is too slow to get a ticket it also has self speed governing rear end noise..

Does anybody here know if you can repair radar detectors? I loved my bell, but the speaker on it died, Id be willing to pay $25. It still saves me at night with the bright text, but thats not gonna cut it for too long...

^^^ They have 1.9???

I bought mine directly from v1 about 9-10 months ago. I ran my serial number, and it says:

Quote :
"V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.8—POP2 with Euro Mode. This is our latest and best performer on both radar and laser.

Upgrade Recommendation: You already have our best. "

what's up with that v1.9????
