it doesn't matter though, because he is living testament to the fact that if you have money enough to afford the A-list treatment, apparently you can avoid dying, or at least stave it off for a long time

with modern medicane Magic Johnson is down to only one AID.
8/14/2006 9:15:51 AM
I think the deal is his HIV has been treated, so he doesnt have AIDSbut im not a doctor
8/14/2006 9:18:16 AM
yep, AIDS is a much more severe disease that is caused by HIV but an HIV infection alone won't kill you.Current regimes of antiretro virals can keep viral levels down to nearly undectable levels, but HIV likes to hide out in hard to reach cells so we can't really fully erradicate it from ones body yet...

Mercury died in '91, when we still didn't know much about HIV/AIDS.These days, most people with HIV can lead a normal life if they're placed on antiretroviral therapy. Those pills are incredibly expensive, though.

we just watched live-aid last night...queens performance was amazing...

There is a theory that Magic Johnson's virus was detected early enough that the anti-retroviral drugs eliminated the HIV....or that he was exposed to the virus, but was never infected. His HIV virus is currently in remission basically because it is undetectable in his blood. This is incredibly rare, but it does happen. The fact that he was a professional athlete in incredible physical condition helps his case becaues his body can withstand treatment better than usual.

I remember him in an interview, I think on 60 Minutes, talking about how he had a "sevensome?" in an elevator.

^ you can get on treatment programs and such still, even if you are poor.nowadays there are many charities who's sole purpose is providing drug programs to poor folks...the biggest deal is getting tested regularly for HIV, once it actually gets to AIDS you are more or less fucked
8/15/2006 3:01:10 PM
