Hall was named president of the State University of New York's University at Albany in 2004.

Prior to his appointment, Hall was president and history professor at Utah State for four years. Rip tide?

100 yards out is pretty far to be swimming.

There's so much that I can say...he was such an amazing man and I am truly blessed to have known him (and to have kept up with him post-NCSU). With every interaction, he reaffirmed my faith in the possibility of genuinely good people making their way in the world. The world of academia is lessened because of his death.

My condolences go out to his wife, Phyllis, and all the people who mourn this tragedy .
