so I have a Linksys WRT54v5. The dreaded VxWorks piece of shit. I bought it back in January by because I didn't know all the changes that had been made.

I have hacked the firmware with the DD-WRT micro version and I'm still having troubles staying online with my laptop. It will drop connections.

Well I'm tired of this whole fiasco but I have no clue what is the best router available. I've seen bad things on all of them. Dealt with alot of Dlink issues. I've fried a Netgear. Now Linksys has left a bad taste in my mouth.

My question to you is what do I try next?

I know you don't like Linksys right now, but I would try getting an earlier model of the WRT54G. I think I have a v2, and I put the sveasoft firmware on there, and i love it.

A lot of people have beef with sveasoft's practices, but I like the firmware and it works on my router with no problem. I think an alternative is openwrt, or something like that.

i've also got a Netgear router, wireless G, and it works just as well, minus all the additions i get with the modified wrt firmware. i've never played with a dlink before.

yea, i just bought that piece of shit yesterday. it was dropping like crazy not to mention the router is say... 20 ft. from my computer. i went ahead and flashed the firmwear with DD-WRT and I still on get half signal strength. what gives? oh yea, how do i do the security encryption now? it says that i have none... ugh.

I have a WRT54G v2. I have no problems except that it doesn't prioritize packets well. Basically wireless gaming is impossible. I've done QoS and I've modified all sorts of settings (MTU being the biggest difference maker) but in the end wired is still 10 times better. The only router I'm really considering at this point is the Dlink DGL-4300.

But who knows, maybe I would get better packet delivery with an alternative firmware.

Netgear sucks in terms of connection stability, especially if someone on your network hogs it down with BitTorrent.

Linksys WRT54Gv6 has some nice QoS options.

Belkin has been my fav.

The linksys ones are the best.

If it's dropping connections with the standard firmware, then the unit is probably defective.

I had a Belkin that was very reliable, but it wasn't too customizeable, then the D-link and Netgears kinda suck for reliabiilty.

I don't keep up with the version numbers. I'll take your word for it though... I have a 1.2 I think and it's been great.

i've had wrt54g v2's and they've all sucked ass for wireless. constant dropped connections with multiple settings and multiple wireless cards.

i, too, need to get a new router.
