We had band class three times a week at state and then we had game day. every class started with calisthenics for a good 15 minutes and then through the class when we got done with a set we had to run back to our spots. Penalty for screwin up on the field was a lap around the track. Is it a fitness class?? no but you will work up a sweat pretty easy regardless

does that mean the AD has actually started taking the marching band seriously?becuase it is an important aspect of gameday atmosphere, and i still remember how bad we looked against Notre Dame's huge band (not knocking those who were in band at the time, our band just doesn't get the university support that Notre Dame's does)

Dr. Fuller (at NCSU) should of been canned YEARS AGO...he's such a Fucking Panzy!! My first two years in NCSU's Marching Band was sweet though, especially winning that trophy during the ACC Basketball competition in Greensboro....I think we smacked Duke, UNC, and then GT for the trophy...correct me if Im wrong...???

We had at least 2 practices a day in high school, lots of kids would lose at least 20 lbs. You are running around for 2 hours with controlled breathing, it wasn't that easy. But yes, it was dorky as shit.

I was in my high school marching band. It was a predominantly black band, and was similar in style to the HBCU's and Big Ten type bands (high step style). I was a very athletic guy (played ice hockey and baseball) and I still worked up a sweat. We had practice from 3-7 M-Th(sometimes it was longer on thursdays and later the hours changed from like 2:30-6:30 when the school hours changed), and had a quick hour run through on friday before getting 2 hours for dinner and dress. We did laps around the entire school, and suicides of the entire parking lot when messing up. Also we would have to do pushups, leg kicks, and endure other types of boot camp type of treatment. High step marching style requires a lot more energy than corps style (which we would actually do every now and then). We had track team members and basketball players in our band that would be sweating bullets when all was said and done. When you put 150+ people in a small room and get them playing hard and marching hard, it begins to feel like a sauna. Also my band director never believed in wearing anything but our dress uniforms at games and parades. Most of the other schools in Mecklenburg County would wear t-shirt and shorts during the first week or two of the start of football season. Imagine putting a hot ass, musty uniform on in 90+ degree weather. It was brutal. It was worth it though. We were treated like royalty in high school (the football team sucked, but the band was very popular). During my first day of high school, upperclassmen that I didn't even know or didn't even remember were saying what's up and asking me how the band was looking this year. It was quite a weird experience. Also no one would ever mess with you if they knew you were in the band, b/c they'd have to deal with the rest of the people in the band. One time I was walking through the hall and had to squeeze through a couple of people that were talking in the middle of the hall and this one bitch started talking shit. She was like "yo you need to watch where you're going, and at least say excuse me." Before I could even whip around to say, "bitch please" this guy that was with them said, "yo, you better watch your mouth. He's in the band and they'll jump you if you mess with one of their members." She immediately apologized. It was awesome. I wish our band did high step style and was more similar to the bands in the Big Ten.[Edited on August 13, 2006 at 2:06 AM. Reason : ]

You guys are all talking about the ND game, and sure their band is better but there are a lot of reasons for that. But were you there during the parade and pep rally at Jacksonville Landing? I assure you things wouldn't have been near as crazy if the band hadn't been there. We were treated like rock stars. That's why I will always defend the band against statements like "no one cares about the band."

Band was awesome during the clemson game....that needs to happen more often because students cant leave their seats....and the alumni really dont give a shit about the band.Plus, the songs were better than the crap they were doing for the halftime show. Whoever is in the band thats reading this needs to make it happen at least every other game.

I was in the marching band at West Wilkes H.S., and our parade was 5.5 miles through both Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro. last weekend in November, freezing most of the time, now THAT was a parade route. I also was in the band at NC State for three years.... College band is so much more fun.... It's also where I met my wife.
