How old is the laptop? Most, if not all, newer laptops come with integrated wireless tranceivers. Judging from your awareness, it could very well be already present in your laptop.

Word of warning on any sort of "free" internet ... don't expect high quality service. I went with free wireless my apartment complex provided for a month and I wanted to shoot whichever !@#$ing neighbors who left their P2P apps running all of the time.

Kensington Park had those issues in the beginning. Then they simply shut out people using a lot of bandwidth within a time limit, and made them relogin. That helped a lot with speeds. My roommate apparently couldn't stay online for more than a few minutes due to this.

you apartment complex will broadcast a wireless signal that will be picked up by your wireless adapter
