Is there anyway I can catch him? I think he uncapped his cable connection, and it's fucking hurting people around here.
8/6/2006 3:56:13 PM
if you know he's doing it, you've already caught him[Edited on August 6, 2006 at 3:59 PM. Reason : ]
8/6/2006 3:56:47 PM
What?
8/6/2006 3:59:28 PM
if you know who it is and that they are doing it... however you found out should be proof enough right?
8/6/2006 4:02:31 PM
Man, I wish preschool wasn't closed on sunday, get out of techtalk, you two (too?). I need someone perceptive in this area.[Edited on August 6, 2006 at 4:14 PM. Reason : I don't know how to monitor bandwidth on such an area]
8/6/2006 4:09:36 PM
what?
8/6/2006 4:11:07 PM
I don't even know how to approach this, Qnt. I need some kind of way where I can see how much his ul/dl speeds are, of course that would probably be illegal to watch that from afar.
8/6/2006 4:19:34 PM
just call TWC or whoever your provider is. I'm sure they have the tools required to detect any unauthorized behavior
8/6/2006 4:38:16 PM
you cant. you can, but YOU cant. call the cable company if you think hes doing something illegal. they will either catch him and thank you or, more likely, laugh in your face
8/6/2006 4:38:52 PM
why would they laugh? and if they do, and it's affecting your service like you said it is, schedule an appt for a tech to come fix it. and if fixing it requires catching this other dude at whatever he may or may not be doing, so be it[Edited on August 6, 2006 at 4:43 PM. Reason : .]
8/6/2006 4:42:36 PM
because he doesnt have any clue what he is talking about. you cant "uncap" your cable anymore without getting quickly noticed.not only that, theres NO way one person uncapped maxing out his connection will affect the neighborhood or any individual user.i love how people have such simplistic views of complicated things
8/6/2006 4:48:20 PM
8/6/2006 4:50:32 PM
Just call TWC and say your service is slow. It probably has nothing to do with your neighbors and everything to do with a crappy cable. Or it's all in your head.

8/6/2006 5:12:06 PM
not resource planning but how a lot of the apartment complexes and even time warner have a bottleneck for an area. First do this test http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ (Click the start button under free test)It's not great but it's free. It'll give you a decent idea of your speed. For instance, mine is 4.4 megabits per secondCommunications 4.4 megabits per secondStorage 531.1 kilobytes per second1MB file download 1.9 secondsSubjective rating AwesomeIf your subjective rating isn't good or better then call Time Warner. Tell them you're having connection speed issues.
8/6/2006 5:49:09 PM
As with most TechTalk threads, this one starts out with a poorly organized/incoherent statement and continues that way through several posts.firm, describe to us what exactly the problems you are having with your connection. When did you first begin to notice problems with your connection? Why do you think it has to do anything with your neighbor? Etc. details.[Edited on August 6, 2006 at 6:17 PM. Reason : .]
8/6/2006 6:17:02 PM
Not ONE person mentioned to ACTIVATE THE SECURITY ENCRYPTION. At that point neither your neighbor or anyone else for that matter will be able to "steal" bandwidth.End of problem.
8/6/2006 6:25:42 PM
because he didnt say anything about wireless, gargs, you also apparently have no idea what you are talking about.
8/6/2006 6:37:42 PM
provide some rr bandwidth allocation statistics, noen
8/6/2006 6:49:59 PM
8/6/2006 7:18:01 PM
google.theres tons of resources out there on setting up your own tftp server and proxy.^^same for you gargs, the "cap" on customers is not one of necessity, its so timewarner can upsell future service.
8/6/2006 7:52:28 PM
upsell being the keywordAnd can you explain "future"
8/6/2006 8:14:17 PM
8/6/2006 9:19:49 PM
^^maybe you havent noticed how tw now offers "premium" rr service? or "business class" service?^ you can still uncap your connection, but they can tell pretty quickly when and if you do so.
8/6/2006 11:07:32 PM
hoooraaaay resnet....gonna miss my dvr box
8/6/2006 11:12:18 PM
not everyone subscribes to business class and even then, an uncapped modem does not distinguish.SeriouslyStop arguing
8/6/2006 11:27:47 PM
i remember reading somewhere that they have software that determines if you are over your limit and people watching and they will shut you down quicklybut i dont remember what the source is so feel free to call bs
8/6/2006 11:32:52 PM
I uncapped a friend's modem for him using the TFTP/Ethernet hack on a SB3100 back in the day... this was less than 2 years after they had rolled it out where I lived, but even then they still shut his shit off within 24 hours. I seriously doubt that your neighbor uncapped his connection and has gone unnoticed long enough for you to post this complaint, probably your roommates are downloading a lot of porn and that is why your connection is slow
8/7/2006 12:42:04 AM
yep, but the bandwidth thing just isnt true.if you are in a complex with a TON of people, your bandwidth will suffer. but the actions of ONE user, capped or not, is not going to have any effect on your connection.
8/7/2006 12:58:50 AM
the surfboard modems twc gives out only have an 8.9mbps theoretical limit, even if it was uncapped, it wouldn't matter. your line has so much unused bandwidth its ridiculous. really, you're just fuckin up and runnin your mouth
8/7/2006 1:09:41 AM
what is the theoretical top speed of the coaxial cablei tried google and found nothing
8/7/2006 1:11:12 AM
ok I didn't know about the therotical max of "twc modems"...but you could always use your own modem.
8/7/2006 1:11:47 AM
no you couldnt because it wont authenticate, and if you proxy the authentication, they catch it and block you.not to mention they monitor bandwidth spikes anyway to prevent abuse. I'm tellin you this stuff is all hogwash, you havent been able to abuse the cap limits in YEARS.
8/7/2006 1:25:26 AM
You can always use your own modem...it's the uncapping that's illegal.
8/7/2006 1:26:18 AM
right, sorry i assumed thats what you meant
8/7/2006 1:30:13 AM
just wanted to tell firm to KISS MINE.
8/7/2006 2:09:08 AM
Can't use your own modem. TWC doesn't allow it anymore. You have to use 1 of 5 Motorola mdoels or 2 others i forget.Don't worry about theorectical limits of cable. Do the test I gave you, if you aren't getting a good rating then there's a bunch of things it could be.Here's a couple questions for you.1) Do you roommates use bittorrent. Most people don't understand that it's not the total speed of the download but how many connections. Bittorrent, depending on the client can have 50 simultaneous connections from that many users at the same time. Not only is this resource intensive but it's also a hog on your bandwith. I don't know enough about networks to explain this well, perhaps someone else can2) Do you have a router? Linksys and US Robotics are notorius for lagging up. Try a restart and test your connectionNow if neither of these applies to you call up time warner and they'll send out a technician.

firmbuttgirl still hasn't explained why he believes his neighbor has uncapped his cable modem.
8/7/2006 9:55:39 AM
^^ Really? I tried to back when they were using these shitty tan modems that kept resetting and they said we were't allowed. Bastages!
8/7/2006 10:00:31 AM
i'm using my own modem right now for RoadRunner..most cable modems have limits of 38Mbps down, 30Mbps up. Some can go as high as 52MbpsBandwidth limit of coax is based on the network.
8/7/2006 2:59:20 PM
I wouldn't say its impossible to uncap - but maybe hard and even harder for your neighbors to see an impact on their own bandwidth.I would say that the way they catch these things is when people abuse the service. Top users of bandwidth get the phone call from TWC. I bet if you did not make it apparent that you were abusing the service, they would not know for a while.I have looked this up before, but from what I understand, DOCSIS limits downstream around 40Mb/s (depending on DOCSIS version) and this is divided among a few customers. Most cable modems physical limit is around 10Mb/s. The speed pulled from a neighbor depends on a lot of things - current DOCSIS implementation, physical limitation of cable modem, and how many neighbors are sharing upstream/downstream channel.http://www.cablemodem.com/primer/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS
8/7/2006 6:04:02 PM
i uncapped mine after i got a cable modem from CC for -$15
8/7/2006 6:07:11 PM
ITS HOT AS SHIT OUTSIDE AND ALL THE WATER DAMAGED SPLITTERS DUE TO SPORADIC DOWNPOURS AND HUMIDITY ARE RESULTING IN BIT ERRORSIVE SEEN IT HAPPEN IN 3 DIFFERENT AREA CODES
