I have an idea for a business, but I have no clue what to do.I've looked online for support, but north carolina/wake county really have nothing for me so far.I've got the space, idea for a name, suppliers, etc...but what I'm missing is the ability to register the name, incorporate myself, etc...I'm sure I'm missing something important, so lemme know what else I need. Thanks!

cant remember the true name for it, but theres always some sort of small business owners association. they helped my parents get the loans, zoning permits, etc. that they needed.

jackleg, how much do attorneys generally charge for this kind of consultation?

yeah even if you're leasing you have to get approvalits not like its a big complicated thing my step dad owns a local business and when he moved it he had to go through the approval process for the different places he was looking ati guess it depends on how its owned but he looked into meadowmont (sp?) in chapel hill and the kroger there or some shit had the FINAL SAY in who got to sign a leasebut like i said it depends on where you're looking to lease some space

i dont know about the consult, but you can get it done from start to finish for around 750. maybe less if i refer you.

dude this is very easy, i incorporated a few weeks ago and got my workers comp and general liability insurance.you can incorporate through a bunch of different places online that will help you for 250-400 bucks. i can recommend by insurance agent to you for the insurances, he made it extremely easy as well. whole process takes about two weeks to go through

each piece of land has a specified land use defined by the county. iirc the land use will have to be changed if it's not what you want, but this isn't too much of a problem when the land use is "office" or "retail" or whatever else. most of the time, however, you are going to have to get a permit to open up shop as defined by the city.and if you are going to have to change a parcel's zoning, which you probably aren't, it's more work.

To start a business, you must register with the Secretary of State. You have to determine what type of business that you will start (sole proprietorship, LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, etc.). Then you have to get a Tax ID from the federal government. If you will be making payroll, you'll also have to have a NC tax ID (all of this you can get from the Secretary of State's website).http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/Corporations

Duke: its not a good idea (at least in NC) to incorporate yourself as an individual. If you use it as a tax shelter and get audited there's a good chance of getting stuck with a LOT of backtaxes.

i know that there are ways to do it that are legit (although maybe not in NC for state tax purposes. don't know about that).i've read a book where it was discussed, and there's no way the author would've incriminated himself like that unless he had his bases covered (and it was a pretty reputable book/author)

go downtown. they will help you. it's not really very hard. costs a few hundo.

most of the time a family will do it to buy property for rental or flipping purposes. But thats a family, not an individual tax shelter. Just have to make sure you have other shareholders.

yeah, i'm pretty sure this dude's corporation consisted of himself and either his wife or his brother, and i think it was for exactly what you mentioned.
