you want people to tell you what to do with your life?why not just do shit you're interested in
8/4/2006 10:21:42 PM
i value your response, but the point of this thread is to figure out new ways to expand my horizons
8/4/2006 10:26:59 PM
go to a community college and get your emt certification...they also offer other certifications for different careers, depending on what you're interested in.
8/4/2006 10:30:38 PM
^do you know any that would be particularly useful later in life?if not its ok, i'm gonna google wake tech certifications and see what they have
8/4/2006 10:33:34 PM
the problem is you're trying to build value for a purpose you have no idea aboutdo you have a long term goal? then maybe people could give you ideas on how to preparethere aren't exactly things out there that will help you out in the future (career wise-- if thats what you're talking about) unless you have an IDEA of what you wantexperience rules the day-- so being a jack of all trades might be a waste of timehaving a lot of experience with random shit in bits is worthless
8/4/2006 10:37:46 PM
i'd say my long term goal is to graduate collegethe soonest i can do that would be a year after this fall semesteri like gardening and fishing, cant really do that muchi use to like legos and NEScant think of anything else :-/[Edited on August 4, 2006 at 10:40 PM. Reason : is that a good goal to have...i guess i dont have goals cause i dont really do much]

EMT is a good cert to get, if you keep up with continuing ed. The way the laws/NCOEMS policies are, it's tough to keep it if you're not an active member of a fire dept/ems squad. if you can make the time commitment, fire/EMS (volunteer) is pretty fun & rewardingmight also go for some computer certs (M$, Cisco, RedHat) if you're technical at all. good differentiator if you're looking for a job. you do have to re-cert those every couple years.

gardening and fishingjoin a fishing club or something and attend their outings-- meet some new people and enjoy a hobbyas far as gardening there is a home horticulture class at state (hs100) thats really interesting and easy to keep up with, maybe take that and apply some stuff you learn in thereif you're major goal right now is to graduate college and you have 3 semesters left-- get off your ass and find an internship related to your majorlike i said experience rules the day. there ARE paying internships out there-- i had 4 different onesits not like i was making bank but the $6/hour i made at times was worth it for the job all the experience landed me when i graduatedif you cant find a paying internship then work a regular college job or whatever and do the internship unpaid. trust me it'll be worth itbut also do yourself a favor and pick a legit internship. you'll have to explain what you did & how you contributed when its time to talk about that stuff in interviews and you dont want to bull shitalso go by the career center and have them help you buff up (or even create) a resume. they can do mock interviews and coach you so you can become a better interviewer. go to their career fairs & put in resumes. some companies are hiring right now but a lot of companies are hiring may 07 grads right nowsince you have time on your hands & you're trying to spend less time on tww (and the internet too in general i'm guessing) spend time making yourself competitive for the job market when you graduateso many people underestimate the importance of this and wonder why companies aren't banging down their door JUST because they have a degreeyou have to bring something to the table & no company wants to hire some dumbass with no experience and nothing going for themjoin some clubs on campusyou have enough time to beef up your resume and have a fighting chance at finding a job[Edited on August 5, 2006 at 12:54 AM. First aid and CPR certification. It will never hurt your chances of getting any kind of job. It's especially helpful in getting summer and student type jobs. When you're older and no longer need those kind of jobs, you never know when having that kind of knowledge will come in handy.

read:if you havn't already, i suggest reading douglas adams' hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy series. it's hilarious, easy to reed, and he's a badass wordsmith. be active:start biking (either mountain or road ), golfing, fly fishing, tennis, and/or swimming...something you can take with you when as you grow older.get creative:if you have any creative juices, then do something like writing, painting, music, etc. at least once a week.find an internship/co-op:you say you want to graduate...well, if you give two shits about doing anything related to your major, then you'll start looking for a internship now.
8/5/2006 10:29:46 AM
getting you emt should be more thought out....i was going to get it for the knowledge...but if you are going to go to the trouble to get it the first time, you might as well keep it up to date....which usually means working with a rescue squad or somehting similiarbut then again it will give you something to do for a semester or so while you are learning it

Definitely look into an internship, but outside of that I think real estate is a really good idea. Not only would you learn everything you need to know for when you want to buy a house, but it's a good side source of income. People make some good money by buying, fixing up and selling homes. So if that was a side hobby/job outside of your future career you could make out.

Do something with yourself that enriches your life and improves another's:http://www.habitatwake.org/It also looks good when you can show active participation in a well known humanitarian project like this... people like more than just certifications and GPA these days. Plus, get out of your house and meet people.

Do what you love. If you don't know what you love, search for it incessantly! Stay active, and keep your eye on the proverbial prize. There is no easy answer to how to live your life, and life is a constant inward battle that you must... want... to win. The playing field is unmarked, and you are the only ref.yadda yadda
