looking to do some stuff with my life that can help me out in the future...just something to do that gives me something beside tww...

i know there is some class people can take to get like a real estate license...anyone have any suggestions for stuff like that?

i also thought of getting like emt certified or something(i heard of something like that before), anyone got some other suggestions for stuff like that?

finally...i was looking to get into more books...anyone got suggestions for books? - i got a few choices right now, prufrock suggested a good one via pm

go to a community college and get your emt certification...they also offer other certifications for different careers, depending on what you're interested in.

the problem is you're trying to build value for a purpose you have no idea about

do you have a long term goal? then maybe people could give you ideas on how to prepare


there aren't exactly things out there that will help you out in the future (career wise-- if thats what you're talking about) unless you have an IDEA of what you want

experience rules the day-- so being a jack of all trades might be a waste of time

having a lot of experience with random shit in bits is worthless

i'd say my long term goal is to graduate college

the soonest i can do that would be a year after this fall semester

i like gardening and fishing, cant really do that much

i use to like legos and NES

EMT is a good cert to get, if you keep up with continuing ed. The way the laws/NCOEMS policies are, it's tough to keep it if you're not an active member of a fire dept/ems squad. if you can make the time commitment, fire/EMS (volunteer) is pretty fun & rewarding

might also go for some computer certs (M$, Cisco, RedHat) if you're technical at all. good differentiator if you're looking for a job. you do have to re-cert those every couple years.

gardening and fishing

join a fishing club or something and attend their outings-- meet some new people and enjoy a hobby

as far as gardening there is a home horticulture class at state (hs100) thats really interesting and easy to keep up with, maybe take that and apply some stuff you learn in there

if you're major goal right now is to graduate college and you have 3 semesters left-- get off your ass and find an internship related to your major

like i said experience rules the day. there ARE paying internships out there-- i had 4 different ones

its not like i was making bank but the $6/hour i made at times was worth it for the job all the experience landed me when i graduated

if you cant find a paying internship then work a regular college job or whatever and do the internship unpaid. trust me it'll be worth it

but also do yourself a favor and pick a legit internship. you'll have to explain what you did & how you contributed when its time to talk about that stuff in interviews and you dont want to bull shit

also go by the career center and have them help you buff up (or even create) a resume. they can do mock interviews and coach you so you can become a better interviewer. go to their career fairs & put in resumes. some companies are hiring right now but a lot of companies are hiring may 07 grads right now

since you have time on your hands & you're trying to spend less time on tww (and the internet too in general i'm guessing) spend time making yourself competitive for the job market when you graduate

so many people underestimate the importance of this and wonder why companies aren't banging down their door JUST because they have a degree

you have to bring something to the table & no company wants to hire some dumbass with no experience and nothing going for them

join some clubs on campus

you have enough time to beef up your resume and have a fighting chance at finding a job

First aid and CPR certification.

It will never hurt your chances of getting any kind of job. It's especially helpful in getting summer and student type jobs. When you're older and no longer need those kind of jobs, you never know when having that kind of knowledge will come in handy.

Yeah, EMT certification would probably be one of the most useful, that is if you are interested in medical stuff. It would be really great if you wanted to do some emergency work with your local ambulance crew.
You could also get a certification in something that has to do with whatever you want your career to be. I know Durham Tech offers a translation certificate if you are particularly good in Spanish.

be active:
start biking (either mountain or road ), golfing, fly fishing, tennis, and/or swimming...something you can take with you when as you grow older.

get creative:
if you have any creative juices, then do something like writing, painting, music, etc. at least once a week.

find an internship/co-op:
you say you want to graduate...well, if you give two shits about doing anything related to your major, then you'll start looking for a internship now.

getting you emt should be more thought out....i was going to get it for the knowledge...but if you are going to go to the trouble to get it the first time, you might as well keep it up to date....which usually means working with a rescue squad or somehting similiar

but then again it will give you something to do for a semester or so while you are learning it

i got 2 majors & 3 concentrations, went to summer school full time for 3 summers

graduated in 4 years & 1 semester

Definitely look into an internship, but outside of that I think real estate is a really good idea. Not only would you learn everything you need to know for when you want to buy a house, but it's a good side source of income. People make some good money by buying, fixing up and selling homes. So if that was a side hobby/job outside of your future career you could make out.
