"UConn coach arrested, accused of causing disturbance
August 1, 2006
VERNON, Conn. --An assistant coach for the University of Connecticut men's basketball team was arrested Tuesday after causing a disturbance because he could not enroll his child in a town recreation program, police said.

Sign up for: Globe Headlines e-mail | Breaking News Alerts Andre LaFleur of Manchester, an assistant coach with the UConn team since September 2004, was arrested Tuesday morning at a Vernon recreation department office and charged with breach of peace, Vernon police Lt. Brian Smith told the Journal Inquirer of Manchester.
LaFleur yelled at a worker after being told he could not register his child for a particular program because its slots had all been filled, police said.
Another department employee became nervous and called police to report the profanity-laced tirade, in which LaFleur cited his connection to the UConn program in an apparent attempt to get his child into the program, police said.
LaFleur was later released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 15.
LaFleur has been an assistant coach of the UConn men's basketball team since September 2004. Before becoming assistant coach, LaFleur was the team's head of basketball operations for three years.
Mike Enright, a spokesman for the university's athletic department, said Athletic Director Jeff Hathaway and head coach Jim Calhoun were aware of LaFleur's arrest.
"At this time we would have no further comment, as it is a pending matter," Enright said.
LaFleur played for three years under Calhoun, then Northeastern's head basketball coach. Calhoun left before LaFleur's senior year to become head coach at UConn.
LaFleur, who left Northeastern as the NCAA's all-time leader in assists, played basketball professionally in Australia for 11 years.
A phone message left at LaFleur's office Tuesday afternoon was not immediately returned."

here's some more details.

"UConn's LaFleur Loses Cool, Arrested
August 2, 2006
By DAVID OWENS, Courant Staff Writer

VERNON -- Andre LaFleur, an assistant men's basketball coach at UConn, became so enraged when his son could not attend a summer program at a Vernon park Tuesday morning, he berated a parks department employee, police said.

The profanity-laced outburst so alarmed another employee that she called police.

LaFleur, 41, was gone by the time officers arrived at Henry Park. But he was taken into custody a short time later at his Amherst Street home in Manchester and charged with breach of peace. He was released on a non-surety bond and is due in Superior Court in Rockville on Aug. 15.

Police said the parks employee was wearing a UConn basketball shirt and LaFleur allegedly told him he should take it off and throw it on the floor.

According to police, LaFleur was trying to drop off his 10-year-old son at camp, but was told the child needed to be preregistered because the camp was full.

"LaFleur became upset and began yelling and cursing at a male employee to the point that a female in another office became fearful for the safety of her fellow employee and she called the police," police said in a press release.

Bruce Dinney, the parks and recreation director, wouldn't comment on the incident, but town officials said the employee was trying to work something out with LaFleur, but the coach wouldn't let up.

In a statement released through the UConn athletic department, LaFleur said: "While trying to enroll my son in a camp that he had attended the past three summers, I became frustrated when he could not be registered. ... I got upset with the counselor and spoke out of character, making remarks I clearly regret. As a camp counselor and coach myself, I have dealt with many frustrated parents over the years. Unfortunately, today I became one of those ... and for that I personally apologize to the counselor involved."

Mike Enright, a spokesman for UConn's athletic department, said university officials had only recently learned of the incident and that coach Jim Calhoun and athletic director Jeff Hathaway would have no comment at this time.

Vernon Mayor Ellen L. Marmer expressed dismay at the incident.

"If someone's having a bad day it is not fair to take it out on employees," Marmer said. "This is not a positive way to release frustration and get any situation resolved."

LaFleur is entering his third season as an assistant to Calhoun. He spent three seasons as director of basketball operations before being promoted after Clyde Vaughn's resignation in August 2004.

that's like what two coaches arrested in eighteen months or so...plus two players.

note: not bashing UConn, just reporting a story.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. They don't have any NCAA rules violations or anything but it's been pretty disgraceful the problems the last 2 years...

on the court yes, but cussing up a storm in front of a bunch of kids no. to be so irate that someone actually calls the cops makes me think it was much worse than just your run of the mill upset parent.
