Ok, so I am going into Mechanical Engineering grad school this fall and I need to find an internship around Raleigh. I am looking for something in the automotive industry but of course...I don't plan to be too picky. I think I am going to be focusing on either Vibrations and Dynamics or Materials. I just don't know what corporations are nearby that might be able to give me an internship. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!Oh, did I mention that my undergraduate degree was in Physics? Makes finding a job in Mechanical Engineering all the more annoying.

you will thank me for moving this for you

I could hook you up but only if you plan to hook up with me

do you know who your adviser will be in the mech dept? if so, they would probably be of far more help than most on tww

well, they dont assign an advisor. i have gone to several professors thus far and they say that i have to simply pick one to help me along the way.

As a physics major you're probably better at vibrations than 99% of mechanical engineers

there are caterpillar facilities in cary, clayton & sanfordcat tends to hire a lot of engineers and always has internship programs going onmaybe try the career centerplus cat really likes to hire interns so if you're interested in a job after you're done with your masters you have contacts in the company

I would talk to the co-op office, Susan Matney may know of something.

^hahahaha . . . your a funny guy. the co-op office knowing something, hahaha. I'd check with the career center for an internship.oh, do you have experience with AutoCAD? cause a lot of companies that give ME internships want that.[Edited on August 2, 2006 at 7:01 PM. Reason : ]

i know sony ericsson hires interns from ncsu by the truck load

Talk to Mrs. Medlin in the MAE undergraduate office. She's the one who companies usually contact with internship and job opportunities, and she passes the info on to students.

i should know you.... i just graduated

Unfortunately with my undergrad in Physics I don't know any AutoCAD. How hard is it to pick up?
8/2/2006 8:12:09 PM
I need to learn it too and I suck at stuff like that
8/2/2006 8:17:41 PM
not very hard. do you have any drafting knowledge? if not try and audit GC120 (solidworks mainly, with a little drafting) which will help with the visualizing n shit. i know there's an autocad course but i don't know the number or if its an intro course.

On a serious note, if you're starting graduate school, and looking for a summer position, I would suggest looking at research labs within the school. That would be a good way to get money as well as establish a future research advisor. The best thing about doing this would be that a lot of faculty members could pay you as much as $20 an hour depending on the funding status. The real world is too filthy!

when are you looking for an internship for? just curious, but what drew you to go from physics to an engineering discipline?
8/2/2006 10:01:06 PM
why did I click on this thread?
8/2/2006 10:37:10 PM
Well, I took Physics for the absurd challenge that obviously comes with the subject, but I mechanics is the part I loved the most about it. I got sick of theory. The ME department let me in on a 'provisional' acceptance meaning that I can't get tuition funding from the school until spring if I do well. I suppose that I can still get a lab job though, but I'm not sure. I would be looking for a fall internship around school.
