While rabies prevention is definitely the way to go, I'm not sure that clubbing innocent dogs to death is the way to go about it.

8/2/2006 3:32:01 AM
That doesn't mean they have to fucking go out and beat them to death.

Tuesday, August 1, 2006 ยท Last updated 3:26 a.m. PTChinese county massacres 50,000 dogsBy CHRISTOPHER BODEENASSOCIATED PRESS WRITERSHANGHAI, China -- A county in southwestern China has killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government campaign ordered after three people died from rabies, official media reported Tuesday. The five-day massacre in Yunnan province's Mouding county spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing local media.Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot, the newspaper said. Other killing teams entered villages at night, creating noise to get dogs barking, then honing in and beating them to death.Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their dogs before the teams were sent in, the report said. The massacre was widely discussed on the Internet, with both legal scholars and animal rights activists criticizing it as crude and cold-blooded. The World Health Organization said more emphasis needed to be placed on prevention."Wiping out the dogs shows these government officials didn't do their jobs right in protecting people from rabies in the first place," Legal Daily, a newspaper run by the central government's Politics and Law Committee, said in an editorial in its online edition.Dr. Francette Dusan, a WHO expert on diseases passed from animals to people, said effective rabies control required coordinated efforts between human and animal health agencies and authorities."This has not been pursued adequately to date in China with most control efforts consisting of purely reactive dog culls," Dusan said. The Shanghai Daily said 360 of Mouding county's 200,000 residents suffered dog bites this year. The three rabies victims included a 4-year-old girl, the report said."With the aim to keep this horrible disease from people, we decided to kill the dogs," Li Haibo, a spokesman for the county government was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua News Agency.Calls to county government offices rang unanswered on Tuesday.China has seen a major rise in the number of rabies cases in recent years, with 2,651 reported deaths from the disease in 2004, the last year for which data was available, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.Experts have tied the rise in part to an increase in dog ownership, particularly in rural areas where about 70 percent of households keep dogs. Only about 3 percent of Chinese dogs are vaccinated against rabies, according to the center. Access to appropriate treatment is highly limited, especially in the countryside.

I don't understand why they have to beat them to death. Couldn't that just shoot them? Wouldn't that be easier and faster?

overKILL. LOL!
8/2/2006 9:51:54 AM
^^ yeah thats a great comparisonbecause only 3% are vaccinated hereand people have died of rabies recentlyoh wait.
8/2/2006 9:53:43 AM
so how many of the dogs do you think actually had rabies?...........and do you think that the owners love of the pets was so that they would keep it if they suspected it of having rabies?.....also, even dogs that aren't vaccinated here don't get beat with cane poles in the streets. What is china going to do next, exterminate all wild animals to prevent rabies? Face it, they way that they are dealing with this makes 0 sense.

$0.63!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that'll buy what...10 dvds in china?

my granny is in china
8/2/2006 11:36:32 AM
The local government did this, they could have sprung for the bullets, since they are most likely made in china in the first place. This is just an example of how uneducated that local government happens to be. There were dozens of more efficient ways to handle the rabies problem (just 3 people have died from it) than kill house pets. I think they just wanted to beat things to death.[Edited on August 2, 2006 at 2:13 PM. Reason : k]

The WHO is right. More emphasis should have been placed on prevention rather than an abrupt "cure". It says only 3% of the pet dogs are vaccinated.Whose fault is that? We don't know. Either:- the local governments DO provide vaccination, but the owners don't take their dogs to be vaccinated- or vaccination is not provided to any adequate degree at allSo, it could be the people's fault, as well as the government's fault.Either way, once deaths do occur, what to do?Either kill all the dogs, or go and vaccinate them. But, if you vaccinate them, you don't know which ones already have rabies, and you don't want to take the time and risk to find out.So the solution which they saw was to kill them. Someone asked why they weren't shot. I don't know, maybe because it would cost money? 50,000 x $0.1 = $5,000 at the minimum, which I guess is a lot of money there.Still, it doesn't excuse the fact that it was barbaric the way it was done.

beat to death dogs being walked by their owners?? what the crap is that. i can see takin down dogs that they KNOW have rabies... or even some strays... but being walked by their owners? i'm pretty sure if a dog is docile enough to be walked around that it doesn't have rabies in most cases...that whole thing is pathetic.
8/2/2006 10:51:26 PM
you act like they have fucking labs on standby ready to do tests on suspected animals. Poor country = cheap, simple solution. humane treatment of animals is strictly a function of standard of living.
8/2/2006 10:57:04 PM
i'm talkin about the pet dogs that people were WALKING. i'm no animal rights activist by any far stretch, but killin a guy's pet dog while he's walkin him is just plain messed up.
8/2/2006 11:10:02 PM
oh. my. goodness. That is rediculous! There is no reason to seize an owners PET and CLUB IT TO DEATH ON THE STREETS IN FRONT OF THEM!! I know China is fucked up and all, but damn! And how hypocritical of them is that! On the EXACT SAME PAGE they're talking about the Chinese military TRAINING dogs! How are you going to kill something and then train the exact same thing to work for you. Those are some fucked up little people.
8/2/2006 11:22:29 PM
the military dogs and all that are obviously gonna be vaccinated, etc.they seem to be claiming that killing the pet dogs is a preventative thing. which, yes, it is.. but it's pretty screwed up. most of the dogs would probably not have gotten rabies to begin with, even with the low rate of vaccination.
8/2/2006 11:25:59 PM
All they had to do was have a mandatory vaccination or surrender your dog. Give them a week or even 2 days. I'm sure they had to pay the motherfuckers who went through and did the clubbing, so they could have just bought/used some gas or euthenasia shots and not tormented the poor dogs. You cannot hit even a medium sized dog once and expect it to die. They probably had to beat them quite a bit. There are much more effective preventative measures.[Edited on August 2, 2006 at 11:33 PM. Reason : ]

8/4/2006 11:46:34 AM
well its rural china and they are not given the option to immunize the dog. I imagine immunized dogs are killed as well. The governments solution is to beat all dogs to death with sticks.
8/4/2006 11:53:14 AM
who caresit's an animalYou don't see me making noise when you kill cows "inhumanely"
8/4/2006 11:54:55 AM
gargs you are pretty fucking ignorant and insensitive. i think you should walk up to a pet owner who just saw their dog beaten to death and say "hey chink, it's just a fucking dog".
8/4/2006 11:55:06 AM
I am insensitive?Have you ever seen a cow being killed?
