Did anyone else see the story about people getting tickets on Fayetteville Street? There aren't even any lines on the street for driving or parking. On top of that, the ticket writers are measuring the distance from your wheel to the curb with a tape measure. What is the maximum distance you can be from the curb? I tried to google it, but I couldn't find the answer. I have always based my parallel parking on the painted stripes, not the distance from the curb.

Thanks for the answer to that. I still think it is BS since they just opened the street and there aren't any stripes. I guess everyone will get used to it over time though.

if you park more than 12'' off the curb, you deserve a ticket -- lines or no lines
7/31/2006 4:15:25 PM
nothing says 'come on down and check out fayetteville st.!" like handing out tickets
7/31/2006 4:16:41 PM
and this is why Raleigh fails at having a decent downtown...the parking enforcement is outsourced to some private company who takes a piss on anyone they can

This is how all big cities work. You park wrong in D.C. and they will just tow your ass.

http://www.wral.com/news/9601856/detail.htmlRALEIGH, N.C. -- On the first business day for the reopening of Fayetteville Street to traffic, some drivers are getting an unpleasant surprise -- parking tickets.Parking ticket writers are out in force, catching drivers who are parked illegally. The tickets are being written even though there are not any clear markings of parking spaces on the street. There is also not a center line painted on the street.City Councilman Philip Isley said he wishes that there was some kind of grace period in effect."As people start to use and enjoy the street, there are obviously going to be some issues of where to park," he said. "To come out of the gate, right off the bat, and start ticketing people for using the street for the first time in many, many years seems to me a bit heavy-handed."According to a representative with the city's street department, lines were not painted on Fayetteville Street for aesthetic reasons.I love it when aesthetic reasons outweigh safety and order. Maybe the city will get more revenue from the parking tickets than they did with the Mall. Brilliant!!!
7/31/2006 5:42:00 PM
Some people don't seem to be able to figure out where to drive without a center line. They will just drive in the middle thinking it is a really wide road. The parking without lines is obviously a problem as well. I never heard of the 12 inch rule until I learned it here on TWW. TWW...keeping citizens abreast of the law
7/31/2006 5:45:28 PM
It's ok to have signs that say "Buckle up, it's the law!" but not signs that say "Parked cards must be within 12 inches of the curb".
7/31/2006 6:04:48 PM
The city tells the parking enforcement company to be comlete nazi's and write as many tickets as possible. Then they turn around and pretend they dont when there is public outcry over it. Genius I tell you!, absolute genius.

Downtown can burn and go to hell for all I care.
7/31/2006 7:47:23 PM
the street is an engineers nightmare. the whole thing is a traffic trap (dead end on both sides) and everybodys riding down it for the hell of it right now it just doesnt add up to anything good for traffic. if somebody wants to turn left then all traffic in that direction will miss the light. it should be one way. the absent lines look ghetto as hell. the "hey lets put big city street lights only on this street" idea was tacky. they need to redu every street downtown just like fayetteville then downtown will be great. but hire a new company next time. making a street doesent suppose to take 8 months.and wtf with the businesseS? i hope those are still the old mall businesses waiting for their lease to run out so rent can quadruple and bring some real downtown businesses/restaurants instead of some bskimbralls lmao that place is ancientpita shop lolpeople stopped shopping at kimbralls like 15 years ago.
7/31/2006 7:57:27 PM
Yea, they can pave over whatever. I'm still not going downtown.

I was down there walkin around last night around 8 and there was some bar with quite a few people sitting outside. We need more of that everywhere. I want Raleigh to be awesome but Im leaving after a year or so........so who cares.

You're right on the sarcasm.I find it hard to believe that the engineers actually agreed not to put any stripes on Fayetteville Street. I looked up some stuff about painted lines and it looks like the only roads that aren't usually striped are dead end roads and subdivisions (unless the Homeowner's Association requests it). It would seem to be a given that a road in a fairly large downtown area would have stripes on it. I don't know why I think this is such a big deal, but I hope that it doesn't become the norm around here.
7/31/2006 10:03:44 PM
It is a dead end road.
7/31/2006 11:45:45 PM
Now you know the real reason for opening up the mall.

Has anyone ever thought that maybe they just have not gotten around to marking it yet? They were busting ass to get it finished in time for the party.
8/1/2006 8:42:07 AM
^The quote above you comes from:http://www.wral.com/news/9601856/detail.htmlThey don't have plans to paint the lines... until they start to have to throw tickets out of court.
8/1/2006 8:44:41 AM
8/2/2006 11:11:47 AM
they should put it in their parking guide https://www.parkraleigh.com/ParkRaleigh.pdf
8/2/2006 12:16:35 PM
what a nightmare the street is turning into
8/2/2006 12:17:31 PM
I think they decided to paint it after someone saw this thread on TWW
8/2/2006 12:44:45 PM
Paint some damn lines!!TWW ftw
8/2/2006 12:47:56 PM
^^^But the 20 extra parking spots will bring big business to the area.
