i tried looking on download.com but i haven't found anything free, or any shareware that doesn't put a watermark or convert the entire thing.

Check out SUPER, http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.htmlor MediaCoder, http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/Both are frontends to ffmpegx and the like, so both should do whatever like of converting you like.I use a program called VisualHub on my Mac that does the same thing, and I've never had any issues converting QT to other formats.

free trial of quicktime pro will do it.

a gracious bump to this thread because it was helpful^ :| I can't seem to find a tree trial for QT Pro.^^ I like the super because it's free (whee!), but the audio and visual aren't synching properly. Have you noticed that? Or should I just use a different encoding? Or should I try the mediacoder and see if that works better?

What format is the quicktime file?If it's mpeg4 a lot of times WMP will just open it if you change the extension.

When I pulled it off my camera, it was .mov. I really want to edit and all I have at this point (not willing to pay for software just yet) is Windows Movie Maker. And WMM doesn't like to mess with .mov. So I either need a converter or something (free) that will edit .mov's.

Just try changing the extension to AVI and see if it works.

QuickTime Alternative provides a directshow filter for .mov files. Then you can use any encoder software that can use directshow filters. Windows Movie Maker might be able to use it after you get QTA and I know for sure that windows media encoder will let you convert .mov to .wmv once you get QTA.
