So im trying to set this up. The problem is it wont me put the domain online. i click on the tab however it never does it. it doesnt say why it wont put it online either. any ideas or is serv-u not the best? thx

Serv-U is not really a good FTP implementation. A better idea is to let us know what it is you are trying to accomplish by running a FTP server and we can give you suggestions that fit what it is that you want to do.

well at work we use a peer to peer network to access a server PC. The server runs XP pro and we want to be able to remote connect and transfer files over internet.

Okay well FTP is essentially a dead protocol - mostly due to its inherent insecurity.

Since you're looking for a simple implementation I highly suggest you look into Hamachi
and just use Windows file sharing. Hamachi will provide a secure VPN and will be practically invisible
and you can just mount a network drive from client machines.

P2P and "accessing a server PC" are two different concepts. I'll assume the second is what you are trying to accomplish.

XP Pro only allows a single connection to/from it ... not handy if multiple people need to be on it at once.

You still aren't making too much sense. Are you trying to setup a way for multiple people to access files at your workplace? You can do what scud said and setup a private VPN with Windows File Sharing on your Windows "server" system.

run G6 ftp server (I think it's called bulletproof now) or cygwin + sftp
everything else on windows pretty much sucks, unless you want to run IIS6

I have used RaidenFTPd in the past, before I setup Hamachi and all that good stuff. I purchased a license for it so that I could use the SSL features on it.

We only need one user on at a time. I just need to be able to access the hard drive of our server from a remote location. I thought FTP might be the best way. Im open to any suggestions though.

Lutz, you probably need a Secure FTP setup (SFTP) of some sort. FTP setups are notorious for getting hacked. There are a number of programs out there which support SFTP. We use VanDyke's VShell software, which is a bit pricier, but offers several layers of security.
