Is it safe to say a honda that will still run but has white smoke coming out of the exhaust has a leaking head gasket? The car starts , idles and will drive right. Car is a '99 with 115K on it. If you do think it is a head gasket issue how hard are these to replace on a honda? I have never messed with foreign engines before. Thanks.

are you sure it's white, and not blue-ish gray?is smoke pouring out or just every so often?get a look at the oil; if it looks milky you've got a blown headgasket.[Edited on July 23, 2006 at 10:19 PM. Reason : asdf]

^oil doesn't always get contaminated. with white smoke out the tailpipe, you WILL lose coolant. you will also get bubbles/exhaust gas back into the radiator. depending on where the failure is, you may or may not get a cross connection with the oil also. another possibility is a crack in the head.
