Alright, so I have the HD box with DVR on Time Warner cable and it is the shittiest goddamn HD service I have ever seen.

Basically, since everything you watch is essentially recorded and played back on a DVR, the HD channels come out really shitty. I am not the only one who has this problem. Also the HD channels have the big grey bars at the top and bottom of the screen, despite my tv being 16:9. I set the aspect ratio but it does not change it.

Fuck time warner.

set-up error.
if your TV and cable box are configured properly, all the aspect ratios will work fine.

when I actually use my Time Warner HD box it works just fine - 52" of beautiful HDTV

aka.. see above.. configure it properly or have someone else look at it - doesn't sound like Time Warner's fault

trust me, it is not a user error. I changed everything in the advanced settings and all of that. Its because of the DVR, according to Time Warner.

If that is what you are referring to the DVR messing up - I have no fucking clue how or why - now... I DO agree Time Warner sucks ass in their tech support so you may have been told something totally fucking random - I just don't see why the same box everyone else uses just fine would be causing a problem on your TV - have them send someone to fix it or whatever

While Time Warner does suck ass in just about every respect, HD DVR (more specifically the 8300HD box in my living room) works just fine. I don't know which box you have, but go switch it out at their office and make sure you have things hooked up properly (basically everything people have said above). Also check the aspect ratio settings - as I've seen them randomly reset a couple times.

Do this on both your TV and your HD Box. There's a button on the bottom left (i forget exactly what its called, i dont have one in front of me) of the remote they give you that will change the aspect ratio for the box.

you have to use component cable or hdmi if you want hd...i dont have any gray bars unless i use a regular tv cable to connect the box to the tv...youre doing something wrong obviously...i have zero trouble with any hd channels looking bad or dvr-ing anything...

if you have the box hooked up via YPrPb, HDMI, or DVI and still get grey bars on the top and bottom.. and the aspect ratio is set to widescreen tv, then ask for a new box..

it's likely you have the box hooked up using composite, svideo or coax, which the aspect ratio settings are ignored since those connections usually only go to a 4:3 tv.

hell i have an HD box hooked up using component on an SDTV, downconvert signals to 480i, squeezed 16:9 on 4:3 TV settings, using my TV's v-compression, and still get a great HD-esque picture with no grey bars.

I actually have had a bum DVR once, but the issue was it pixelated everything terribly, and a new one removed the problem.
