and helps israelis for free?pure facts-i just learned that american citizens (you know, the people that pay american taxes for a millitary to protect them) are normally charged by the state department for being evacuated from a warzone. the fee has been waived in lebanon this week thanks to a few democrats in congress today and the americans will be taken to cyprus for free where they will be granted discount airline tickets. twisted facts and opinion-LMAO. americans pay taxes for a military to protect them and have to pay again if they get stuck in danger. these people are now in cyprus (thanks to the other military american citizens pay for putting them all in danger) and have to pay tons to fly home (even 25%(assuming thats the discount the state department worked out) of a ticket from cyprus is heavy duty money)meanwhile israel gets a full u.s. millitary to go run temper tantruns all for four easy payments of $0.00.

Cause you just know all of us are going to be trapped in a warring country at some time in our lives More accurately, I'm glad they charge their asses. No point subsidizing stupid behavior. "Gee, the place I am visiting is getting fucked up, I could buy myself an airline ticket out of here right now for $2000, or I could wait for the marines to come and get out of here for free!"

well technically the Israelis blew up the Beirut Airport runways first so evacuation was a little tought but if your vacationing in the Middle East you know there is always the chance of violence. I am sure you have to get a special endorsement to go over to those countries anyways, and I am sure there is a disclaimer stating if you have to be evacuated you will pay for the cost of it.

I'd just like to chip in with the info that the tickets are not discounted.

it's also a law, enacted by congress, that evacuees have to paythe military has absolutely nothing to do with this. they aren't CHARGING anyone

old news. they already said on the news this morning they weren't gonna charge anyone, they retracted it.but yeah its pretty messed up imo
7/19/2006 1:57:04 PM
I fail to see how it's messed up.It's not like the Govt. is responsible for your stupid actions...why would anyone even goto the heart of terrorland for a "vacation"

^ Even if they do have a valid reason for being there it doesn't lessen the need to disuade individuals from using the U.S. military as a transportation service. More specifically, by providing this service for free they are encouraging people to stay in risky areas when they can get out. Sure, in this case the airport is closed so options are limited, but that is not always the case. Next time you will have people trying to decide between leaving today with a $1200 airline ticket or leaving next week for free with the U.S. army. The U.S. government would obviously prefer people departed as soon as possible, so they incentivise it financially. It isn't like they are demanding payment upfront. After you get back to the U.S. just declare bankruptcy and get out of the debt if it is prohibitively high.
