Where can I find info about whether my family's cars use R12 or R134? one is a 95 Avalon and one is a 94 5 series.

should be on a sticker under the hood, or look at the ports, if they are about 1/2" diameter, its 134, if they are about 1/4" its 12

is there a certain year that all cars switch to R134?

Yep, and '94 is it.R12 cars use a threaded 7/16 SAE connector. R134 cars use threadless quick disconnect connectors.

so for my 94 car, should I just assume that it uses R134?

how hard is it to charge the freon into the car yourself? I'm trying to see if I can do this on my own.

simple:Disconnet old line and let the old 134 spew everywhere including the oil in the system. Some dick licks on the board may tell you that doing so is illegal and other bullshit. It is illegal to let your old 134 vent to the atmoshpere so don't do it standing in front of an EPA agent.Next w/ your cheap wal-mart, autozone, etc 134a kit tighten the new adapters and follow the instructions on how to refill the system. Then sit in the car and feel the cool air. Enjoy.

How do you diagnose an AC problem. Im considering buying a buddies old BMW for a project car but the AC doesn't work. When you turn the AC on it revs higher so to me that sounds like the compressor isn't working. Is it possible that its a minor repair or do you just replace compressors? (And I don't need AC but it would be nice if it isn't too expensive to get working)
