So I bought a 100 gig external drive for use with my Dell Inspiron 8600. The drive is hooked up through the USB port but is not recognized by the computer. DiscWizard does not recognize the device either. Surfing around the internet has been no help. The same external drive was recognized immediately by my Dell Latitude D610. Any ideas what the problem is? Some sites said to make sure you have the XP service pack 1, which I do have.

tried any other ports on the computer?

There are only 2 USB ports and neither appear to work for this drive. However I can hook my camera in through a USB port with no problem

maybe the drive is USB2.0, but the laptop doesn't have USB 2.0 ports.

I am pretty sure the computer has USB 2, any way to confirm?

right click on "My Computer" and then goto device properties...expand USB devicesyou should have a High speed USB controller or Ver 2.0 or something.
