orI was cleaning around a job site on Friday and came up with a whole handful of colorful snake and a pair of pants full of, eh, nevermind.Anyway, both are native to our area. I've read that few hospitals carry the antivenom though.

coral snake, which one is the poisonous one

The second one is a poisonous coral snake. It's suprisingly difficult to tell the difference when the sonambitch is wrapped around your hand.

I think look before you leap is an appropriate phrase for this situation

Was this in NC? If so, it almost certainly wasn't coral snake.Btw, that pic is of some crazy Latin American coral snake. Our coral snakes look more like this:

RED AND YELLOW KILL A FELLOWRED AND BLACK, CANT DO JACK

Yeah, we get coral snakes down here, too. I know there's the little "Red on Yellow kills a fellow" rhyme, but if I see something with red, yellow and blue bands, I'm not sticking around long enough to play the little rhyme. Their venom is actually quite potent and IIRC, they "chew" when they bite into you.

haha . . . i know a guy who is in hte HVAC business and has been crawling under other people's houses for years. he says the only time he ever came across a snake was when he was under his own houses. and apparently it was a pretty good sized snake too.

With my job I get to remove copperheads from yards and crawl spaces. Monday was my first day and I almost put my hand on the copperhead we removed because I somehow didn't spot it with my flashlight before moving forward. But yes, copperhead is the only one in the Triangle. If you want to see cottonmouth and rattlesnakes, go toward Fort Bragg. Had an internship out there one summer and constantly had to find detours around the cottonmouths.[Edited on July 16, 2006 at 9:33 PM. Reason : ]
