Suspects accused of trying to pass drink recipes to rival company PepsiCo

Quote :
"ATLANTA - Coca-Cola and Pepsi are usually bitter enemies, but when PepsiCo Inc. got a letter offering to sell Coke trade secrets, it went straight to its corporate rival.

Six weeks later, three people were to appear in federal court Thursday to face charges of stealing confidential information, including a sample of a new drink, from The Coca-Cola Co. and trying to sell it to PepsiCo Inc.

“Competition can sometimes be fierce, but also must be fair and legal,” Pepsi spokesman Dave DeCecco said. “We’re pleased the authorities and the FBI have identified the people responsible for this

The suspects arrested Wednesday — the day a $1.5 million transaction was to occur — include a Coke executive’s administrative assistant, Joya Williams, who is accused of rifling through corporate files and stuffing documents and a new Coca-Cola product into a personal bag.

Williams, 41, of Norcross, Ga., and 30-year-old Ibrahim Dimson of New York and 43-year-old Edmund Duhaney of Decatur, Ga., were charged with wire fraud and unlawfully stealing and selling Coke trade secrets, federal prosecutors said.

Atlanta-based Coke thanked Pepsi for its assistance.

Chief executive Neville Isdell said in a memo to employees Wednesday that the company is cooperating with federal authorities.

“Sadly, today’s arrests include an individual within our company,” Isdell wrote. “While this breach of trust is difficult for all of us to accept, it underscores the responsibility we each have to be vigilant in protecting our trade secrets. Information is the lifeblood of the company.”

He said Coke will review its information protection policies, procedures and practices to make sure it safeguards intellectual property. Coke spokesman Ben Deutsch said the formula for trademark Coca-Cola was not stolen in the theft

If they wanted to fuck over Coca-Cola (along w/ hurting our economy), they would've gone to the Chinese

after visiting India, I'm convinced that they are the reason Pepsi is still around

Evidently India kicked Coca-Cola out some years ago, and although they're back, Pepsi has massive market share there.

hook, line, and sinker.

I'm sure Pepsi has Coke's formula at it's disposal and the probably know every product that Coke is actively working on. It's amazing just how much companies know about each other's development plans.

^ yeah, high likelihood they even know some (all?) of the ingredients (other than the obvious on the label, duh) plus do we really want them both to taste exactly the same?

With all the flavors out there - cherry, lime, vanilla, black cherry-vanilla - it makes diet soda easier to swallow I don't like that aftertaste from "plain" diet Coke or diet Pepsi - but the others aren't so bad. In fact, I like the black cherry-vanilla Dr. P better than the regular of that flavor.

Ya, it's really easy to figure out coke's (& pepsi's or just about anyone else's) recipe. You could figure out the exact recipe simply by using some type of LC/GC.

Pepsi did the right thing because they could be held liable for MILLIONS if they didn't & someone found out.

Anyone find it comical this happens just a few months after that Coke Zero commcerial where the kid tries to reveal the "secret" of it's making on the commercial?

You know what they say about planting ideas in people's heads...

Pepsi fucking sucks. I don't really like Coke all that much (although every now and then I just need one)...but it's much better than Pepsi.

And I love Captain and Coke. And that Coke Zero is pretty fucking good for zero calories. I don't know how they pulled that off.

Pepsi's good, but Coke caters more to the drinking community with it's deliciously flavored drinks.

what is so secret about the recipe anyway? if i wanted to make a coke, i'd pour a pound of sugar in some tonic water, take a dump in it for coloring, pat myself on the back, and say job well done.

Back when Pepsi changed up their look and adopted blue as their main color, they made a big push in Bahrain and other Middle-Eastern countries. It was smart for them to aggressively pursue such a relatively untapped market.

[Edited on July 8, 2006 at 9:29 PM. Reason : I'm guessing that that's why so many Iranians work at Pizza Hut out here.]
