I just bought a 300gb USB 2.0 drive from Fantom Drives

got it running on a new Trendnet USB 2.0 PCI adapter

biggest problem: whenever I try to transfer files to it my PC locks up

secondary problem: when I boot XP it doesn't immediately recognize the external drive... I have to turn it on and off first

put the pci card in another pci slot.

I've had this problem before with shitty usb pci cards. if you move the card and it still has issues, take it back for a different branded one (the usb card)

that's a good idea

I should test the drive on another XP machine too

doesn't help any that its a brand new install of XP of unknown stability

I changed the slot... nothing

I removed the USB mouse from the onboard older onboard USB controller

that stopped it from hanging up when it fails to write to the drive
the light on the drive turns from blue to red and nothing... I can turn the drive off now and turn it back on... the icon shows back up under My Computer
