Just ordered me a second monitor, and i've never had 2 set up before, so seeing what kind of programs are you guys using to perhaps make the best of it. i know some extend your start bar to the other monitor, etc. i wanna have primary for say games, and secondary will be showing say AIM and AI Booster, etc.

P.S. they'll be running off SLI.

Ultramon!

Make sure you have the newest nvidia drivers so you can go into and out of SLI mode without restarting. SLI might give you some issures depending on how you want everything set up.

you'll love it...I don't even game on my PC but love the duals

Use one for the internet, and the other for either a Word doc, Excel sheet, movie, etc. Hard to NOT find ways to use the extra space

if you have nvidia cards, all you need is nView

I don't think you can extend the start bar with nView.

no they wont. in dual mon mode, each will be functioning as a seperate card.

youll need to disable your dual mon. setup when you want to run a game and utilize SLI (ultramon will do that)

SLI is complete financial bullshit, sorry you bought into that

Good catch I forgot about that bullshit. You can still do dual monitos, but yea, youll have to use Ultramon in SLI mode to do it

I have a regular monitor and a second TV/Monitor. The TV/Monitor is absolutely perfect for watching movies, especially when paired with a wireless mouse.

i didn't know ultramon handled sli mode

what exactly does it do

...or do you mean use ultramon to enable/disable secondary montors? nvidia control panel handles that when you enter sli mode, but i guess it won't re-enable them.

I forget.

so wait, i know that both will be running of the primary card. but what do you mean by disabling the second monitor to run games in sli. i do have the latest nvidia drivers, the cards are 7800 gtx, my primary goal of getting the second monitor was to have shit open on the second mon while running games on primary

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/530045.html

so can it be done or not. if yes, then how.... that's the only damn reason i got the fucking monitor, i'll be really pissed off if i can't use it. like that forum says, i wanna run a game on primary using SLI, and have the second monitor idling, showing PC stats.

[Edited on June 30, 2006 at 9:24 PM. Reason : ]

if not, i guess my only hope is to get ANOTHER cheap ass PCI video card and just run the second monitor off of that, is that possible?

i dunno, for some reason i thought the cards just could designate most of their power to the primary monitor, and just a little bit to the secondary

so is it possible for me to get another card and use that for the second monitor

how does that work with the motherboard? in that case, could i just plug in the second monitor into the on-board video?

never mind, don't have an on-board video

I've got 3 monitors on the trial version... (unless my roomate cracked it and I didn't know about it...)... I love ultramon... the only things I use though are the seperate pictures for each monitor and the toolbars that go on each screen

4 monitors, 1 disabled
Current desktop: 3840x1024 (-1280,0 - 2560,1024)

hotkeys are pretty convenient too. you can disable monitors or move a window or span a window with a customizable key combination.

fuck that. anyway, get the monitor in about an hour, we'll see what's up. as for the 3rd card, i've been reading a lot of shit online and they all say that it should be an ATI card instead of nvidia, so nvidia drivers can't take control of it and blah blah blah. i guess that's what i'm gonna have to do, it's gonna be interesting how much shit will i run into trying to use both nvidia and ati cards...

since you have dual 7800gtx's that each take up 3 slots with the aftermarket cooler. That leaves what? one space left for a pci slot? Thought you were running wireless network card in that slot at your apartment.

^too late.

1. google
2. basically it's combining 2 video cards (SLI = nVidia, Crossfire = ATI) into 1 more powerful GPU.

well

So is mixing ATI and nVidia like mixing oil and water, as in too hard to be worthwhile? Or is it more like mixing oil and Rosie O'Donnel, as in gross, ungodly, and wrong beyond words?

^^^Getting stable drivers to work on on an ATI card itself is a challenge. I can only imagine what it would be like to mix it with another brand card.

so does that mean having an nvidia and ati card on one computer using pci-e won't work? I mean not setting up SLI or crossfire since that won't work... duh. But shouldn't that work?

You don't really need to be in SLI mode if you're not gaming. When you are gaming, turn on SLI since you won't really need the second monitor. Or, since you have 7800gtxs, don't use SLI at all since 1 gtx will wtfpwn 99% of the games in existance.
