[long rant] fyi.....just wanted to forewarn everyone about this because I am extremely upset with Reeds right now. In late April I purchased a 1/7 carat diamond necklace (sirena brand) at Reeds with some money that I won for a contest at state.

WELL...fast forward to last week. I have only worn the necklace probably 20 times or so since I've had it. I bought the diamond warranty and all that stuff. I happened to be walking down my sidewalk into my house when my chain suddenly fell down my shirt. I then spent the next 40 minutes searching the ground where the chain fell off, but no diamond pendant. So I back track to my car, no pendant. No pendant in my parking lot. So basically, the chain broke off my neck (it was still clasped together; the chain itself broke) and the diamond fell off at some point in time during the day and it is gone.

Even though I have the diamond warranty, they can't do ANYTHING for me because they claim that I lost the necklace and they don't have liability for that; I am still 100% at fault because I LOST THE PENDANT.....because the chain BROKE OFF OF MY NECK.

I find this disturbing and appalling that they will do nothing for you even if it is a manufacturing error that the necklace broke- especially when you buy the warranty and all that jazz. Anyway, my mom is taking back all of her Reeds stuff because of this and I wanted to warn everyone not to go there because it's totally ridiculous

/rant

The only time jewelry stores will replace diamond as such is if they fall out of the socket.

I bought protection for that, but anything else, Jared's said I will need separate insurance

^Yea, I mean I understand why they don't cover total losses....obviously if I didn't clasp it right and I was standing in front of my dresser they aren't going to replace the diamond...however since the chain totally broke off and I didn't feel it until it fell down my shirt I think they'd try and do SOMETHING for me......

Honestly this isn't just a Reeds thing. I've bought a lot of jewelry for my wife and that's how most of the chains operate. They normally sell really shitty chains when compared to the value of the pendant. You insured the pendant, not the chain. It sucks, but I am fairly sure that most jewelry stores would have treated your claim the same way.

Everytime ive bought jewelry they have always made it very clear what they do and do not cover. This sucks for you and all, but it is not their fault.

maybe you just broke it yourself and kept it

but really, i don't think that if it it had been any other jewelry store, they would have done anything different.

Lesson: Don't buy nice jewelry at chain stores

Go to Johnson's Jewelers in Cary, my family has used them for 25+ years

it really does suck, but I don't really blame them for not being able to help you without the diamond. I mean not that you would, but you could potentially give necklaces away to your friends, so you lost them, and get new ones if they covered your situation.

I'm sorry that happened to you though.

its like this cuz of fuckers who purposely remove the diamond, keep it and return teh chain. Taking advantage of a system fucks it up for all of us. I get soo angry cuz, i buy a lot of diamond stuff for my g/f and one day a diamond is bound to fall off and i'm gonna get pissed cuz I know they arent gonna do jack shit about it even thought i spent extra money on the warranty

warranties are pretty much for suckers anyway. It seems like a large portion of the time the company finds a way for you to not be covered anyway, I mean they have whole departments who's primary function is to try to make sure your situation isn't technically covered.

I've always been happy with Reed's. I've been there a few times and the service was good- I once fell asleep with a pair of diamond earrings a guy got me from Reed's still in my ears and the next morning one of diamonds was gone, fell out. Even though I had no warranty they replaced the entire set and gave me a gift certificate.

I thought the rule with pendants though was never to use the chains that comes with them? I have a set that I use- but maybe that's just what my grandma did.?

It's your fault for buying jewelry from a chain and not at least upgrading the chain. Everyone knows the basic chains are junk.

All I gotta say is that when I spent $600 to buy my mom a diamond pendant...I spent another $250ish on a nice gold chain.

i'm thinking that's what reeds is thinking. fair enough. i'm sure enough people actually do that. as someone else said, the few assholes ruin it for everyone else. that's the way of the world.

this is how they all operate - not just reed's - so are you saying don't go to any jewelry store? you got a defective piece evidentily - it happens - will they at least repair it for free?

this is why you have homeowner's/renter's insurance -

^yea, they'll repair the chain but there's nothing I can do about the pendant.

My mom has THE SAME chain with a $500 pendant on it, so I figured I was safe but I guess not. I didn't realize that the chains were that shitty, honestly. Where exactly does one go to get a "good" chain?

Oh, and btw if the diamond FALLS OUT OF THE MOUNTING, they will 100% replace it because that is considered a manufacturing error.....but since the whole pendant fell out, they won't replace it.

Yes, I could have stolen it, but the store manager knows who I am (as well as my family) and feels really bad about it but has "no authority" to do anything....and the regional director keeps claiming over and over that I simply lost it so she doesn't care what happens. I'm calling HQ Monday to see if they can do anything for me......
