I just bought a MacbookPro a few days ago. Got it for $1800 with my student discount. The guy was telling me I should get the AppleCare for it which covers it for 3 years instead of 1. It normally costs $250 but with the student discount it comes to $185. Is it worth that or not? I would think if there were going to be any problems with the laptop, they would either occur in the first year (which would be covered by the warranty) or after 3 years (which wouldn't be covered anyways). Has anyone had any experience with them?

i just don't want to buy the warranty and then take it in when i have a problem with the laptop and have them tell me "oh sorry that's not covered by the warranty" like best buy does.

Yeah go with the warranty. I've had my laptop for over 2 years and right before my warranty expired my hard drive shitted out. I could care less about a warranty on my PC, but a laptop is definitely something you need to keep protected.

^ Get a warranty through the manufacturer, most of them are good about repairs. BB and CC usually give you shit about repairs.

Don't get it yet! You have up to 364 days to decide if you want to extend it. If you're still enjoying it after a year, then you can decide whether you need to get it or not. Also, if you have lots of problems during your first year, it may also either prompt you to sell it or get the warranty.

For mac book pro's your waranty cost as a student should be $240. If it's a regular mac book it would be $185. That said, yes, laptop waranties are always worth the money. As far as things not being covered, it doesn't cover user damage, so as long as you don't break your computer it will be covered.

Unless you plan to let it sit on a desk 90% of the time, get the AppleCare. All the movement on a laptop causes stress that adds up over time.

Also, given that it is a first revision of the model, repair needs are hard to predict. When I buy mine in August, I'll wait a year and then buy the AppleCare.

I say get it. From personal experience, Apple will bend over backwards for you if something happens. When the latch on my powerbook started to pop open on it's own, I called them up and they had a back for me to return it in on my porch the next day. I packaged the laptop up, called up DHL, and had it picked up the next day. It was returned to me within the week, and not only had they fixed my latch, but they also replaced the screen and the dvd drive.

GET IT! My Powerbook G4 which had a 3 (1+2) year extended warranty had these problems:

1 year old - Superdrive died: Apple replaced it.

3 years 1 month - Logic Board died. Apple covered the $1240 replacement even though my warranty expired. When I got the powerbook back it booted fine but the internal Airport card would not work. I took it to the Apple store and they sent it back to the Apple Repair center - all for NO CHARGE.

GET IT - It's cheap even if you don't use it.

AppleCare is pretty awesome anyway. I was near to the end of my warranty and the hinge on my TiBook broke. They fixed that as well as replacing my worn down track pad and a lot of the case without my having to request it. After three years of constant use it looks brand new again. Can't beat that.
