Im only about a couple dozen pages into the book, so I can't really help you remember which book it is. Its a pre-Cardinal of the Kremlin & I think pre-Hunt for Red October, but after Patriot Games. Ryan goes over to England to work for some guy named Basil.

The characters keep referring to Ryan's "Canary Trap", something he devised to flush out foregin intelligence agents from what I gather.

Question is: can any one tell me about the canary trap and what it was? Also, which book was it from?
