oh add ed harris to that list of sarcasm spooky
6/22/2006 12:25:35 AM
i meanit is really a question of people who play very diverse roles such as those that spookyjon facetiously posted or people who repeatedly play roles that are either very similar or are played very similar such as those posted in this thread.
6/22/2006 12:26:33 AM
u mean type-casted?
6/22/2006 12:27:09 AM
right like i posted earlieri was just further explaining my pt b/c i'm sure spookyjon's post was directed towards mebut walkens last 20 or 30 roles and all of peschi's roles have been very similar

meryl streep always has to have a damned accent, but i consider that talent

Ben Stiller.

type-casted typically refers to supporting/b-actors. I'm talking about LEAD actors who play the same character no matter what the plot is. The plot changes and their "character" simply reacts accordingly.

I will boldly second Walken. Fact of the matter is that the man is so established that all he has to do is "play Walken" and he's done. I support that.
6/22/2006 12:56:28 AM
Does your mother sew?
6/22/2006 1:08:33 AM
I disagree with Jack Black. He was not "playing himself" in Nacho Libre, Shallow Hal or King Kong.
6/22/2006 1:13:18 AM
I mean, I was obviously joking when I posted, but the main pattern I'm seeing here is that people with distinctinve speech patterns get called out for "not acting". The Wilson Brothers, Jack Black, and especially Vince Vaughn, these people have all acted in some fairly diverse roles. They don't have the ability--or, rather, they haven't had the opportunity--to reinvent themselves with every role as some character actors do. I don't think, however, this means they "aren't acting" or that they "just play themselves".
6/22/2006 1:16:53 AM
^ I call bullshit. They've had plenty of chances to establish themselves, no?
6/22/2006 1:18:04 AM
The first two roles I remember Vince Vaugn in were a rapist and then a murderer.I'm going to bed. Maybe I'll put forth a more thought-out position tomorrow.
6/22/2006 1:23:11 AM
But the thing is that now Christopher Walken has so much notoriety as a cult favorite actor that people write roles like that specifically for him to play.
6/22/2006 2:04:58 AM
the name of this thread should be 'actors who are perpetually typecast'

6/22/2006 8:10:02 AM
Bobcat Goldthwait...Though he's a prime example of an actor that doesn't really have a personal identity. They have to act the part even when they are off the camera. Tom Cruise also comes to mind but it seems that most actors are this way. Actors that aren't themselves, they just play themselves... if you will.[Edited on June 22, 2006 at 8:14 AM. Reason : -]

Come on people. The most obvious choice here is Will Smith. A typical movie is Will Smith playing himself in a job that he doesn't have in real life. In Bad Boys it was Will Smith as himself as a cop. In Enemy of the State it was Will Smith as himself as a lawyer. The job might be different, but the charecter is always the same.Honestly though, I like most of his movies, with Enemy of the State being my favorite.

if pierce brosnan was anything other than a sarcastic witty asshole in person i would be shocked. he gets the same role in every single movie.
6/22/2006 8:41:31 AM
vaughn started out with swingers and tried to do different roles but they didn't do well in the box office...now he's been typecasted. i hope that he's made a bigger name for himself he does more diverse roles like he tried to do early on...but that's just wishful thinking.
6/22/2006 8:45:12 AM
george clooney(except "oh brother")
6/22/2006 8:45:41 AM
i don't think he played himself in intolerable cruelty either...never saw syriana so i wouldn't know.
6/22/2006 8:53:38 AM
....reading this thread i'm mostly reading the names of actors who have an acting style as opposed to always playing themselves...i guess it's hard to tell the difference sometimes...
6/22/2006 9:05:02 AM
Yes.Acting Style = Jack Black.Playing themselves = Eminem.There's a pretty obvious difference.
