Find somebody who can get one with an education discount/education site license without breaking work policies. I think we pay less than $100 per Standard license.

my windows install is 2-3 years old and is fine, but interestingly enough, my ~9month old gentoo install is all kinds of fucked up

you have more chances to fuckup gentoo than windows - you must not know what you are doing

but thats just it. it was fine for months. now it randomly segfaults. probably kernel and package updates + unstable tree
