Is this even legal? My company is going to be closed on July 3rd and July 4th. July 4th counts as a paid holiday for everyone. HOWEVER, we are being charged with PTO (paid time off) for July 3rd. It is deducted from our yearly amount of paid days off. We have no say in this, and can't work that day instead since the office will be closed. This is bullshit. I'd be much better off using that vacation day for another purpose. Again, is this even legal?

Of course it's legal. Private company, they can do pretty much whatever the hell they want. I know my dad's company, Nortel, used to do this all the time when they shut down the plant for a week in the summer.
6/20/2006 1:07:18 PM
Yes, it's legal.A company can force you to take your vacation or PTO.
6/20/2006 1:08:56 PM
still BS

6/20/2006 1:12:10 PM
wouldn't kill the fuckers to give us one more paid holidayshit like this makes me wish sometimes i worked for a union...
6/20/2006 1:32:56 PM
yay personal choice holidays
6/20/2006 1:36:03 PM
I have no idea about any applicable laws, but I'll agree with you that it is pretty shitty.
6/20/2006 1:39:20 PM
it's legal. it's also legal for you to quit without notice.
6/20/2006 1:42:25 PM
my current and last few jobs have certain days that are paid holidays, and then the usual vacation time that you accrue. but then, i have been working for small businesses.
6/20/2006 1:44:57 PM
^thats exactly what I have. My days accrue.^^yeah but thats bad for references.
6/20/2006 1:53:20 PM
that's silly. floating holiday, anyone?
6/20/2006 2:02:24 PM
it is legal if it is in the policy manual. Not that bad at least it is Paid time off
6/20/2006 2:23:41 PM
Hey some of us poor bastards have to work every holiday so be thankful
6/20/2006 2:26:49 PM

6/20/2006 2:42:50 PM

6/21/2006 3:09:16 PM
About the only situation in which they CAN'T make you use vacation/PTO is military service with the National Guard, Reserves, etc.
6/21/2006 3:18:20 PM
In NC, beginning K-12 teachers get 10 vacation days a year, which are all scheduled for you: 5 at spring break and 5 at Christmas break.
6/21/2006 4:05:40 PM
Yep. Most companies have designated holidays and a few personal choice. But if the site's closed for a holiday that's mostly when they are mandated.
6/21/2006 6:03:44 PM
i haven't heard anything like that for my company, but i know if we have to shut down for inclement weather the days we miss has to come out of PTO.
6/21/2006 6:14:09 PM
^That sucks. Mine only counts if the office was open and you didn't make it in. Closed for inclement weather is its own special category.
6/21/2006 6:16:24 PM
yeah it does suck, but fortunately most of the managers would most likely let you make it up.
6/21/2006 6:19:33 PM
6/21/2006 7:05:35 PM
Eh at UPS you cant carry days from year to year, what you dont use you get paid for at the end of the year. You also cant schedule a vacation between thanksgiving and new years day. So lets say you start in September. Yep you have to use your one week vacation after one year between september and november.
6/21/2006 7:13:35 PM
I don't see what the big deal is.
6/21/2006 7:15:37 PM
Hey guys let's complain about paid vacation.
6/21/2006 7:26:32 PM
6/21/2006 10:55:12 PM
If you're company is closing I think you have bigger issues to worry about.
6/21/2006 11:07:15 PM
Try working as a contractor. You don't work, you don't get paid...
6/21/2006 11:09:57 PM
^actually I work for a mechanical contractor (abet a very large one ~150 employees)
6/21/2006 11:18:13 PM
So you aren't a full time employee?
6/21/2006 11:33:16 PM
on wholeday?what ever are you going to do???
6/21/2006 11:41:47 PM
I'm full time. I'm a project estimator, and my Co bids around 40 jobs/week.
6/22/2006 1:03:45 PM
yea its legal a lot of company's make their accountants take paid time off to prevent accounting fraud
6/22/2006 4:39:28 PM
They just made the 3rd an extra holiday here. I don't know if I'll still be working here, however.
6/22/2006 4:47:13 PM
^^^^^^i beleve he means a contractor as in a contract employee, not a contractor company. contractors earn hourly wages as opposed to salary.[Edited on June 22, 2006 at 5:39 PM. Reason : ^]
6/22/2006 5:38:48 PM
They do that at my office too, July 3rd is a "floating holiday" but we're forced to take it. I don't really care because I'll be at the beach.
