Is this even legal?

My company is going to be closed on July 3rd and July 4th. July 4th counts as a paid holiday for everyone. HOWEVER, we are being charged with PTO (paid time off) for July 3rd. It is deducted from our yearly amount of paid days off. We have no say in this, and can't work that day instead since the office will be closed.

This is bullshit. I'd be much better off using that vacation day for another purpose. Again, is this even legal?

Of course it's legal. Private company, they can do pretty much whatever the hell they want. I know my dad's company, Nortel, used to do this all the time when they shut down the plant for a week in the summer.

Yes, it's legal.
A company can force you to take your vacation or PTO.

my current and last few jobs have certain days that are paid holidays, and then the usual vacation time that you accrue. but then, i have been working for small businesses.

About the only situation in which they CAN'T make you use vacation/PTO is military service with the National Guard, Reserves, etc.

In NC, beginning K-12 teachers get 10 vacation days a year, which are all scheduled for you: 5 at spring break and 5 at Christmas break.

Yep. Most companies have designated holidays and a few personal choice. But if the site's closed for a holiday that's mostly when they are mandated.

i haven't heard anything like that for my company, but i know if we have to shut down for inclement weather the days we miss has to come out of PTO.

^That sucks. Mine only counts if the office was open and you didn't make it in. Closed for inclement weather is its own special category.

Eh at UPS you cant carry days from year to year, what you dont use you get paid for at the end of the year. You also cant schedule a vacation between thanksgiving and new years day. So lets say you start in September. Yep you have to use your one week vacation after one year between september and november.

^^^^^^i beleve he means a contractor as in a contract employee, not a contractor company. contractors earn hourly wages as opposed to salary.

They do that at my office too, July 3rd is a "floating holiday" but we're forced to take it. I don't really care because I'll be at the beach.
