So I'm buying a case of miller lite at a gas station. The lady behind the counter asks for my ID. I give it to her. She says "oh, sorry I can't sell you alcohol you're under 21". I say "but I was born in 1983". She says "well thats true but it says "under 21" on your license".

Apparently, if it says "under 21" on your license they're not suppose to sell you alcohol now in North Carolina even if you are over 21 according to the date. I don't have to get my license renewed until 2009, why the hell should have to the DMV to buy a new license? Has this happened to anyone else? How much is a new license?

Oh and she ended up selling me the beer anyway.....but still.

It's likely just another source of income for the state. Think about it: if half of the folks in NC that turn 21 wanna buy beer, there's a $15 fee. That's a lot of extra income.

There's no other logical explaination, really.

EDIT: If she knew what she was talking about.

i never had a NC license while i lived in NC (kept my CA license the whole time). i know they do different color backgrounds, depending on if you're 21 or not. on CA licenses, when you're underage there is a big red line across that says "AGE 21 IN 200X". do they do that on NC licenses?

As a store owner, if I had a choice of facing fines or being ultra-strict about what licenses are supposed to look like ... I'll go with being strict.

I think I've got a better story.

So my birthday is 7/16/1983. But I had my old license (i've gotten a new one since then) for a long time and the "8" was kind of faded out (my old wallet use to mess up my IDs too)...but the rest of the year was clear as day.

So I go to the ABC store at the corner of Avent Ferry and Western late in July two years ago (so its at least a week after I turned 21) to buy some liqour. I get to the register and the old lady tells me she can't sell me the liqour because she can't see what is suppose to be the "8".

I don't get mad at her, because I know that usually gets you nowhere. So I calmly tell her that I understand, but hypothetically the number is either a "7", "8", or a "9". Which means I'm either 11, 21, or 31. Now I'm not the oldest looking 21 year old, but I sure as hell don't look 11, and even though I'll take it so I can get the liqour, but I don't look 31 either. So it's only logical that it's an "8". I swear she looked at me like I just tried to explain to her thermodynamics. She refused and I went over it again. She told me that she'd have to wait for the manager to get back.

So I sat there and waited for like 10 minutes while other people checked out in front me until the manager came back. He looked at my ID for like .5 seconds....looked at the lady at the register and said..."Are you retarded?? Does this guy look 11?? Sell him the fucking liqour."

The wait was definitely worth the lady getting owned by the manager.

Yeah...most of you fuckers know how old I am. I am ancient.

I was at Harris Teeter up on Western, buying a coupla bottles of wine. That Mamoon dude (the portly Indian feller) checks my ID and says "your ID is expired. I cannot sell this to you." A week after my fucking birthday. The day it expired.

Me: "You have got to be kidding me. I'm old enough to be yo daddy. Call the manager"

He did. Ten seconds later I walked out with my wine.

ok, so i have to ask the obvious question. If I order a duplicate online, will it still say under 21 or would they change it automatically?

Remember, we are talking about the DMV here. Not exactly the smartest group of people.

the best is talking your way out of dumb policies like everyone in your group needs an id. tell um you'll just leave and come back alone in 10 minutes... when they say that wont work ask them how long would you hypothetically have to wait before ever being able to buy beer in there. such a dumb policy.

that said some dumb bartender told me i was under 21 6 months after my birthday.

Bartender: sorry you're under 21
Me: uh yeah check again
Bartender: it says 83
Me: it is 2004
Bartender: so...<thinking over it for a secon>
Me: My birthday was in january, 6 months ago

i mean, i understand you try to be strict, but it is his job and he looked at it for probably 1/10th of a second before denying me and then arguing with me.

in response to zxappeal's post- why would it matter if the id is expired? it doesn't make you younger when the card expires. I've known other people to have the same problem.

On the side of your picture, it has either "under 18" or "under 21" respectively written vertically down the side...when you turn 18, the "under 18" changes to a "under 21" after you get your license renewed.

Working at a grocery store for a while when I was younger, I can tell you that clerks are not supossed to accept expired IDs/licenses as well as out of state ID cards. You can accept out of state licenses. Apparently, in some states it is really easy to acquire an ID card. As far as the expired thing goes, my manager always said that people are more likely to give away their expired IDs/licenses to be used fraudulently, so our company set a policy not to accept them. We were also not allowed to accept the expred IDs/licenses or out of state IDs for proof of ID while check cashing. IDK if it's like that everywhere, but that's how it was at the grocery store.

go to the dmv and before walking in, break-in-half your current license (the one with under 21 on it) and tell them you need a reprint because your current was broken in the wash/at the gym/by your dog, etc. if its your first duplicate, the dmv wont charge you a dime and your new license will no longer say under 21. you won't even have to take a vision test. i did this two weeks ago on when i turned 21 and i was in/out in 4 minutes.

and by the way, dmv offices are usually packed with people (hispanics mainly) so i suggest going down beside the legislature (across street from musuem) and they have a mobile dmv bus out there (looks like a click it or ticket bus but is says NCDMV). no one ever goes there and two sweet ladies are always inside waiting to help you and will get you out quick.

okay so im going to add to the stories...

so im here in Ft Collins, CO this summer and my roomate and I go to a place called "Rio Grande", where the best margaritas ive ever had are made. We sit at the bar, order a marg with salt and he asks to see our ID's...thats cool, I hand it over. He eye balls the fuck out of the card, asks me my are code to my phone number, then goes back to his book to check it out. He comes back, I sneak in a little "dude, you cant fake the new NC liscense, look at all the holograms." he replies, "youde be suprised."

He takes my ID back and checks it with three managers, comes back, throws it in front of me at the bar and states "you cant fake that accent", and makes us a drink. Next time he sais something to us he tells us our minimum of three drinks has been met, and we will have to leave. Meanwhile , two girls next to us have a $70 tab which equates to 10 between them so I ask him if its a bar rule or just his PMS rule. We are like , okay, were dont drinking margaritas, but were not leaving. He goes "oh yea you are, ill close your tab while you and your friend head to the door." We dont move, he comes back with the manager who tells us we cant have any more margaritas, so we order a few beers and drink some more just to piss him off.

I usually tip at least 20%, he got a big fat zero...i know these people out here gotta check ID's but if your make an ass of yourself you should attempt to be cool in order to save your tip

Technically speaking an expired Driver's License is not a valid form of ID, hence the refusal. So, if you appear under 30 and they sold it to you without a valid form of ID they could probably get in trouble. I've never heard of it happening before, but theoretically the establishment could get fined by ALE.

The proof of ID from everyone in the group is more or less a safe rather than sorry policy. It makes a lot of sense from a store's point of view. There's no easier way to get busted than for a couple of people to go through line, one over one under 21, sell them the alcohol, and then hey.. what happens if the under 21 year old carries it out of the store? Selling to a minor, great.

For every story of idiocy there's probably a story about a place taking a nice $5000 fine for something similar.

slight change of topic, but have any of you had trouble with your license fading in your wallet? I just got mine in August of '05 and it doesn't expire until 2013, however its already really faded. The top and bottom of my pic are faded so you can't see my hair or my chin real well, my birthdate is faded, as well as whatever they put above the expiration date (can't read it any more). I don't see how its ever going to last until 2013

About how much they get fined...

I dunno about stores but I worked in a fast-food type restaurant where one of the ladies was dumb as shit and she just stared at the IDs and then sold them beer because she was too stupid to figure it out. She sold beer to a 16 year old girl working for the cops and showed her her actual license...it cost us $1000 and if it happened again within a year, it would cost us our liquor license.

Stupid morons.

Yeah, I've also kicked around the idea that it was a money generator for the state. I mean, why put an address on the drivers license? I'm sure there are a lot of people that move at least once, if not multiple times, within the time frame that a license expires. They could just scan the back or run the DL number to pull your address off a database but they'd rather require you to update the address on your license with every move.

When I got my first license they were still doing the red backgrounds. You would hear rumors of the DMV workers forgetting to remove the red background for people and their license became their free pass to underage drinking. It's probably all handled by computers now - the system probably puts the "under 21" disclaimer on the license automatically based off the birth date - no more human error.

I can't remember all that well but I seem to remember the license you get when you were 16 expiring on your 21st birthday. Specifically because it was the time to make the switch over to get the red background license. I guess they have changed that? At what age did you guys that are having this problem have to renew your license?

Sounds more like a three drink maximum to me.
