So I hook up my laptop to the TV with the audio video cables and I kinda expected it to just work, but it didnt and then I tried to configure it through Media Center but that didnt work either, any quick fixes?

Right click on desktop > Click on Properties > Click on Settings > Click on Advanced

Self explanatory from there.

reboot the pc if it's an ATI card

it will look for the signal on boot and output to composite if it's all that's plugged in
