I just woke up the computer from sleep mode and it made kind of a grinding sound. I turned it off for a bit, then when I turned it back on, it made the grinding sound again but only for about a minute. I just now rebooted and the sound wasn't there and my computer doesn't seem to be operating any differently than normal. Does anyone have any ideas off the top of their head as to what this could be? The computer is less than a year old.

fan bearings.

fan blades hitting something

my old pc used to do that. I just blew about an inch of dust off the fan and it stopped making the grinding noises...

My video card's fan bearings do that on startup. Cheap piece of shit.

id just punch my old comp, that seemed to work each startup.

my stupid motherboard fan (MSI) keeps making that noise on start upi blew it out as best i could and it did nothing the sound comes and goes... its wierd

It stopped doing it, but I opened it up and blew away the dust anyway. There didn't really seem to be that much and none of the fans seemed to be hitting anything.

^^ I have the same motherboard. I ordered the Zalman ZM-NB47J and am gonna cut a few fins off and mount it on the chipset so I can take that loud ass heatsink/fan off. I'll never buy another board with active cooling on the chipset.

that wont work because my huge ass video card is right above the chipset fan and heat sink (i.e. very very little space for the fan and a replacement would have to be just as tall as the original fan which is like <1"[Edited on June 13, 2006 at 11:21 AM. actually yeah that happened to me too (the other one i was talking about was the psu fan). i had to replace it by borrowing one of kris's that i have yet to give back.

^^ yeah, you're video card may be larger than my x800XL. I should only have to cut off 5 fins off of this
