i might watch the us game's highlights in the world cup, but ill be damned if i'm going to wake up every morning to watch conquestodor vs. susikastan for 2 and a half hours, i mean can people not really find something more interesting to do.... soccer is the worst sport ever invented
6/9/2006 12:29:18 PM
Ok. Don't watch then.. Why do people think that someone might care that they don't like the sport?
6/9/2006 12:32:03 PM
susikastan is gonna surprise some people this year
6/9/2006 12:32:59 PM
just seein if there was anybody else out there like me man, its cool
6/9/2006 12:33:38 PM
^ they're on sports radio, go listen to them
6/9/2006 12:38:24 PM
my roommate "didnt like soccer" and guess what he's off of work today glued to the tv and keeping me informed of what's going on. it's exciting once you start watching it. it's funny i played in high school and my parents and family hardly ever came to watch me(i'm black..haha) and the few times that the did, they said it's was soo much more exciting than they thought.
6/9/2006 12:40:34 PM
i don't hate soccer, but i do not understand the need for the off-side rule. i can understand the need for it in ice hockey, but the rule in soccer is much different, which is based on the position of the defensive players, instead of a set line. to me it limits the amount of break away oppurtunities that could be possible.
6/9/2006 12:41:58 PM
that's where speed comes into play...you don't want some to just be posted up past the line and they recieve a pass and is already in front of everyone on the field..by there being a line, it gives both teams equal chances of getting to the ball and obviously the fastest person usually wins.it's just like basketball when there is always the guy staying at his goal waiting for the ball to score easily.[Edited on June 9, 2006 at 12:46 PM. Reason : it's a great rule]
6/9/2006 12:45:27 PM
not really...if there was no offsides call then people could cherry pick by the goal the whole timeits like if we put mario williams already on the other side of the line of scrimmage before the ball was snapped every playthat would be total PWNT.
6/9/2006 12:46:04 PM
my point exactly
6/9/2006 12:46:57 PM
well i guess i wasn't completly clear. what i mean is if there was a definitive line that stayed the same like the blue line in hockey, instead of basing it on the position of the second to last defender, i think the sport would be much better. i'm in no way advocating cherry picking, but it seems like whenever a good player anticipates that his teammate is going launch it over top for him, he gets called every so often for being off-side. imagine if they allowed you to get behind the defenders some 20-50 ft in front of the goal. imagine all of the exciting breakaways that could happen. i'd love to see a player charge from the side into the middle behind a couple of defenders, get the ball and go in for an exciting break away. with the way the rules are now though you have to make sure you are lined up with the defender at the time your teammate touches the ball. i think that it's just that i have the hockey mindset, and that i think it's a better off-side system. if i had played soccer all my life i would probably prefer the soccer system.
6/9/2006 12:57:07 PM
yeah that's understandable..but i mean all of those breakaways would get old. it would cut out all the work you would have to do to get past the defenders which is a really fun part of the game, it's where all the sick moves come into play. And plus it would put waaaaaay too much work on the goalie..he would be doing like 75% of the defense each and every game.
6/9/2006 1:05:26 PM
well that's where i think even better defense would come into play. you wouldn't always be able to isolate one player by having two to three men always around him. hockey in general isn't a high scoring game, but is very exciting, not to say that soccer isn't. i've seen a few soccer games where a lot of the time the two teams couldn't get it into the 18 yard box. soccer will never be huge in the united states
6/9/2006 1:16:37 PM
but the great soccer player knows how to get away from 2-3 defenders and that's fun to watch
6/9/2006 1:17:32 PM
in all seriousnessi think if you took soccer and hockey, and counted goals as 7 points instead of 1, americans would get into it a little moreeven though a 4-3 soccer game is basically the same as a 28-21 football game...the 28-21 score sounds like more stuff has happened
6/9/2006 1:19:39 PM
Germany is winning that's all that counts
6/9/2006 1:19:52 PM
F GERMANY....RACISTS PRICKS..HAHA
6/9/2006 1:21:30 PM
6/9/2006 1:25:05 PM
that is true indeed and you get to be very very phsical...especially on defense..I love playing that position. I can just run at the forwards/midfielders and pretty much do whatever i need to do to get the ball away, except for tripping, but there are ways to get aroudn th at.
6/9/2006 1:26:39 PM
seriously, get rid of this piece of shit thread
6/9/2006 1:27:36 PM
i think why football is so popular is that every down has the possibility to be a scoring oppurtunity. there's a lot of build up for each down and a lot of unpredictability (not to mention more violent). we're comparing fruit and vegetables here. the beauty of it is that each sport has some great unique things to it. this is a pretty good game going on right now. with a definitive line, questionable off-side calls like the one just seen on the Coasta Rican goal, would be less likely.

yeah watching baseball on tv is pretty boring. I'm trying to get into, but i just can't
6/9/2006 1:35:54 PM
^i feel ya on baseball. shits purrty boring
6/9/2006 2:11:58 PM
6/9/2006 4:08:25 PM
that was another one of my points. it would open up the field and spread out the players more, preventing them from bunching up, and allowing teams to have 2-3 guys shadow the star player. it would force the individual to play better defense.
6/9/2006 4:13:14 PM
people who hate certain sports are so cool
6/9/2006 4:20:50 PM
yeah i'm so uncool if i can't seem to get into a certain sport, man.[Edited on June 9, 2006 at 4:24 PM. Reason : fhds]
6/9/2006 4:24:07 PM
^It's not if someone can't "get into" a sport, it is more of people who hate on a sport just for that reason. There are tons of people who just go around posting "soccer fags" or "World Cup is gay" just because they dislike the sport. How often do you see people doing the same thing for basketball or American football?
6/9/2006 4:36:56 PM
I hate soccer!

GOOD POINT. that's the measure of a sport's worthfuck this game i dont know precisely how much time is left!!!!!a game is 90 minutes with generally 2-3 minutes added on for stoppage time.not hard to have a general idea of how much time is left
6/9/2006 6:28:08 PM
daddytime, please don't take this personally or anything, but shut your gay ass up!Just because you don't know how to play the sport or understand it, it's still the most popular sport in the world. Watch the highlights or not, I am sure nobody gives a shit. Again, I hope that nothing was taken personally and that your gay ass is still ok after this post.
6/9/2006 6:44:50 PM
yeah the offsides rule that has been a cornerstone in soccer for hundreds of years is retarded.

Not a big fan of soccer but I'll quote "Dogma." "What did you do at Sodom and Gommorah? You lit a few fires...""Hey man, I reigned down sulphur, there's a subtle difference. I mean, mass genocide is the most exhausting activity the one can participate in except soccer."^although, I'd have to say that wrestling must be in contention.

i'm learning to enjoy hockeybut soccer i just can't get into
6/9/2006 8:07:02 PM

If there was a definitive offside line in soccer, the art of the well-timed and intelligently-placed run would be a thing of the past. The field is far too large to be split into set zones. The dynamic offside line also allows a number of through ball strategies, from short, splitting passes to over-the-top schemes starting with the goalkeeper. The nature of hockey lends itself very well to a definitive offside line. A rush has the sole purpose of a direct scoring opportunity, and the fact that the playing area is enclosed and includes an area behind the goal allows for a deep zone cycle to be an effective offensive strategy. The ebb-and-flow nature of soccer, instead of end-to-end chances in each direction, means that an effective offense can include leaving men near the net, then backing the ball out and working it around to a slightly different attack angle before sending the ball back in. This is similar to the thought process behind the forward cycle in hockey, but the "deep zone" area can effectively include the entire offensive third, so a definitive offside line could disrupt work-around play as much as aid in the speed and frequency of breaks.

I personally think that golf is much worse than soccer. Soccer can be interesting if you see it in person, and boring otherwise-but, golf is horrible no matter where you are when you watch it.
6/9/2006 8:29:05 PM
my opinion is better than your opinion

Soccer is a sport for guys who can't throw.Too fucking boring to watch. But I can admire soccer players for all the running they do in a game.
6/9/2006 9:54:35 PM
so....what about basketball, football(minus the QB) , hockey, and pretty much every other sport besides baseball?all just sports for people who can't throw? what the fuck does that mean
6/9/2006 9:59:13 PM
"In this country of 82 million, one Hamburg city official estimated 85 percent to 90 percent of the country watched Friday night's World Cup opening match. "
6/9/2006 10:01:46 PM
^^^ Tell that to guys like Jay-Jay Okocha who can throw the ball from the sidelines all the way to the center of the box.
