All the full auto guns for sale in the gun shops are police trade-ins and all the full auto guns on the market are marked "Law enforcement only."
I don't have specific evidence, but it's simply common knowledge.

It's interesting that full autos would be listed as "law enforcement only" since citizens CAN get licenced to have full auto.

Meh. I don't have the money for that, so I won't worry about it too much

Cops definately have full auto weapons. Make friends with one and go out for an afternoon at their shooting range. It's quite fun.

you have to have a federal firearms license to own fully automatic weapons.

people are always confused by the terms automatic and semi-automatic. automatic weapons are those that will fire more than 1 round per pull of the trigger. semi-automatic do not require any special license, and will only fire 1 round per pull of the trigger. often times they look nearly identical, like an AR-15 and an M-16. One is semi, the other is auto.

the FFL is pretty hard to get and fairly expensive, especially for the gun shops and they are very strict about following the rules and documentation to sell automatic weapons. which is why it's pretty rare to see them on the street, or at the very least, used on the street.

You can't get an 01 FFL just for collecting—it has to be for "business purposes".

As for NFA transferable weapons...meh. Most of those are true pre-'86 ban weapons, and are priced accordingly. I think new LE trade-ins are for dealers and LE only. I know dealer post-samples are for dealers only.

I know the difference between semi and fully auto, just wasn't sure of the legislation behind fully auto. The permit thing seems sort of moot b/c if you going to have an automatic weapon, you probably have the means to get one on the DL, or mod it yourself.

What are some legit reasons to apply for a fully auto permit anyway?....I need to kill a bunch of animals really quick?

some private security companies and the occasional gun nut who has lots of money laying around, a lot of land and likes the thrill of shooting up old cars and shit like that.

oh and i wasn't replying directly to you about the difference, just that when these threads come up there's always a shit ton of people that don't know the difference

Depends.

M16A2: Fixed carry handle, S/Semi/3rd

Anyhow, full auto is mainly the realm of collectors. Civilian uses (mainly hunting and home/shop/personal defense) generate little/no demand for automatic fire, although this is a rather weak argument for banning FA weapons to use civvies. I don't really feel like getting into the politics of the debate, though; TWW is far too unstructured for such things not to degenerate into flamewars.
