Tires being slashed in Cary (near OR around North Cary Park)

Flat Tire #1
Woke up early Monday morning around 6:00 am to go running with a friend. Parked in North Cary Park and ran down the Greenway. Drove back. Showered. Headed out to work. Got to work and my front driver's side tire was flat. Put on spare @ lunch time and took to tire shop. Shop couldn't repair because damaged on sidewall.

Drove home on spare that evening. Checked all tires and they were all good (atleast they looked like it).

Flat Tire #2
Woke up the next morning. Rear driver's side tire is flat. Took it off, noticed a nail. Found the problem, Right??? Not really, read on...

... wife takes me to tire shop this morning. We look at the tire. And air is coming out the side as well. Both tires had about a 1-inch slit in the sidewalls.

Analysis
I'm concluding two things may have happened:
1) My tires got slashed Monday morning at North Cary Park. The first one went out that day, but it just took a while for the second one to get flat a day later.

2) Someone has it out for me/car and slashes first tire at my apartment complex. Then notices they want to go ahead and slash the other tire the next morning.


My friend's car was at North Cary Park that morning too. But, he didn't really notice any flat tires. His tires were low on air this morning, but not flat. He's going to go get it checked for leaks/vandalism and get back to me this afternoon.

I've filed with Cary PD and my insurance. Cary PD says they've been having a few incidents in the area. If anyone knows the guy ... please don't tell me ... because there may be an incident of slashing flesh and not rubber.

I'm a nice guy. I smile and wave to all my neighbors. I'm even friends with a police officer, Officer McCormick, who lives right above us in the apartment complex. You can say I'm the quiet asian neighbor who minds his own business. But, poor poor Falken's... I've had them for less than a year too! Still had 3/4+ tread

just be on the lookout for punk kids - in these cases of random vandalism a lot of the times the person who does it will want to see the expression of the person when they find out

BREAKING NEWS:

In the first post I mentioned that my friend was there with me that morning running. Well, this afternoon he got his tires checked. And YES, they are slashed too. I guess it took his a little longer to deflate since they were BRAND NEW Hankook tires He just got them like 3 weeks ago. I feel really really sorry for him. Hopefully both our insurances will cover it.


Oh... and hopefully the crook gets nabbed. If it's a punk kid, he better get his act straight...

you can slash a tire and nto cut all the way into it, jsut slice the sidewall. If you want to end a message, you slash deep anbd leave them with flats. Otherwise slice shallow and hope they have a blowout if you are realy pissed at them. Besides, it takes mroe force then you would think to spice a decent tire open unless you have a boxcutter with a new blade vrs a knife.

Well, I guess my friend ran over something sharp with his passenger side... and then I ran over it with my drivers side. And it left both tires with perfect 1-inch gashes in each tire. Sounds reasonable/logical right?

It was pretty surprising how long our tires lasted.

My tires (8 month old Falkens):
- Front lasted less than a day
- Rear lasted over a day

My friends tires (Brand new, 3 week old Hankooks):
- Both lasted two whole days before going completely flat

Cop neighbor called me back with updated info. There are about 10 people (including my friend and I) who have had their tires slashed this week.

My advice: Don't hang out or park anywhere near North Cary Park area.

Crook caught on tape

First of all, let me say..... Wooo hoooooo! Caught cha' you stinky little bastard!

Story
Time: At 5:00am this morning my buddy and I put up a sting. We chose Monday morning because we were hit on Monday morning and also a few other people we know have been hit on Monday morning.

Location: North Cary Park. My buddy hid in the woods close to the street. I hid in/around playground.

Equipment: 1 Digital Camera (in hand), 1 35mm Camera(in hand), and a Video Camera(hidden behind some bushes).

Bait: Wife's Yellow 2003 Mazda6 (yummy bait for the beastly creature).

The Culprit:
At approximately 5:48 am, a Town of Cary work truck pulled by. It circled around once in the parking lot. Then came back around and parked behind my wife's car. White male, probably about 5'9"-5'11" maybe, white shirt, khaki pants, white baseball cap. He took out a bucket like he was going to pick up some trash. Then went around to passenger side of the car and started jamming the tires with the sharp thing used to pick up trash. Went to drivers side, but only did rear left tire. All this, caught on video tape (although, not a great video because he parked right behind the car and blocked some of the view). The part you do see is him getting the rear-right drivers side tire. My digital camera didn't get any pictures because the zoom on it is so crappy... but hopefully my friend got some better pictures with his 35mm. But, the video should be more than plenty to nab the guy.

Final Verdict:
None yet, they should call us in this afternoon to identify the suspect. And they said they would return the evidence to me. So, I should be able to post video/pictures up in the near future of the suspect and the event.

Conclusion:
It was pretty exciting to see what happened. After 45 min, me and my buddy didn't think anyone would come. But then this guy shows up. My nerves and adrenaline was out the roof. I really wanted to just jump out and pounce the guy, but I knew we had to catch him on video tape red handed. Well, I'll update you guys as soon as possible.

Wow that is awesome that you got the evidence.

Sounds like someone hates their job and is taking it out on taxpayers. I would push for 1) his job and 2) restitution, get the media involved if the town doesn't pick up the tab for your losses. You know how they like a good video.

The coolest thing is...

I dropped my wife's car (the yellow Mazda6) off at the tire shop this morning and put on $684 worth in new Michelin tires ... I'm definately going to make sure I get re-imbursed for that and my tires on my scoob. Yay! Free tires (sort of)

It's OK, $684 is the cost of stock Michelin tires. 3 tires were slashed... Always supposed to get tires in pairs. So had to get 4 tires.

Besides, we nabbed the crook for them. I don't know why they couldn't get him sooner.
It was easy too... my buddy was even wearing a bright red t-shirt. I can't believe he didn't spot my buddy... I guess since the crook has done it so much he's become a little careless.


Personal Thoughts
I'm free to speak my mind and I'm not afraid to... I really and honestly do think Cary PD didn't really care about this case or really didn't try as hard. Probably just not worth their time or effort. Probably didn't have the resources to go after it. Who knows and who cares. All we know is that we got the guy.

A few good citizens were willing to sacrafice a little bit of their sleep, sacrafice a few tires, and get up early in the morning to catch the guy on video. We're just lending the community a helpful hand.

While the officer was gathering info, a guy that comes there regularly to walk his two dogs gave us a thumbs up. And the regular mountain bikers that we see applauded us. Hey, we did a good deed. No more slashed tires. Safe to park at North Cary Park again.
