Ok so I've been wakeboarding for a year enough to where my boat is no longer adequate to keep progressing... I plan on getting a better boat so I was thinking somewhere in the 2003 malibu or nautique range... but then yesterday I went out on a 2003 malibu VLX (MONSTER WAKE)... and the guy would sell it to me for a price that I was prepared for and willing to pay... but as the day wore on and I kept looking around at how ridiculously nice the interior was I kept thinking to myself... I would worry WAYYY too much about people puncturing my interior and would probably be a complete asshole about it...It made me realize that I want something more used, not crappy, but just not pristine... It was an odd feeling to NOT want one of the best things possible... anybody ever feel like that about a really high end car that you probably COULD afford?

When it comes to a boat I'd never buy a new one. I want some beat up piece that I can just run ashore if the mood hits me. Even a new one's going to get some pier rash in no time, so why bother?
6/3/2006 5:46:48 PM
yeah pier rash is another concern, this isn't a new boat, its taken the severe part of the depreciation curve already... but yeah I'm sticking with "too nice" I went out on my own boat today... I love that thing, its a wonderful old boat... but by the time I do an engine/outboard swap and throw a tower on the thing I'd be looking at an easy $8-10k... whereas I can buy an older mastercraft with the same features and a better overall quality for pretty much the same price... but it would have an old engine/hardware in it, and I know the whole deal with my boat b/c my family bought it new in 1986...

cant you put a fin on the motor to creat mor wake or can you attatch something on you boat for more wake. kind of like fins on cars for down force? im not a baot expert just curious
6/3/2006 7:42:39 PM
you can put a hydrofoil on the outdrive... that helps a little in shaping the wake, but its more about the ammount of weight that you have in your boat, more weight means the boat sits lower in hte water means more displacement means bigger wake...but in order to put more weight in the boat your have to have more power... 120hp is great for most applications... but not for a fully weighted boat with a bunch of people in it... something I have been looking into for the immediate future is going from a 19pitch to a 15 or 17pitch prop which will change where my RPMS are at compared to speed so you get into the engines power band... but I've found enough other boats to ride on for the time being that have everything neccessary to provide a fun time wakeboarding... its just nice to have your own boat b/c you can make your own list of characters to take out

brian, if you can afford it, get the nicer malibu. First of all malibus arent the greatest boats in the world anyways. If you have nicer things ppl tend to be easier on them, if there your good friends i wouldnt worry about it. but ultimately its up to u, i just woundnt want another boat i would grow out of, i mean the malibu will last your a while from a luxury/cruiser standpoint

he just doesn't want to feel bad about fucking it up
