You start from scratch but this is where you can end up:

http://www.youtube.com/?v=OS_3T2H1ptI

Ofcourse it's your choice as far as competing too (with our team..but it's cool b/c you get to travel etc). However, you can just dance socially if you desire. And this is where I met my boyfriend.

Ladies really appreciate when guys have the balls to learn ballroom dancing b/c honestly, not many guys do. So stop thinking you're too much of a "tough" guy or ballroom is for old folks. And you don't have to be gay to start dancing...in fact none of the guys in our club or team (to my knowledge) are gay. Besides look at the way you get to move your lady wherever you want her .. It can get pretty scandalous

So yea..for the summer, lessons are Wednesday (7-8:45) and Friday evenings (5-8:45) and you dont need ANY dance background. more details: http://www.dancingwithwolves.org

And let me know if you go and how ya like it! And um, spread the word and bring friends.

I loved taking social dance this spring.

The videos you posted aren't really ballroom dancing at all though. They are highly choreographed and rehearsed routines, which to me defeats the fun of ballroom dancing.

Thanks for posting this though, I'd really like to keep learning on the stuff we did in class.

this is true...social dancing consists more of swing, salsa and the likes. You also get into cha cha, rumba, waltz, etc, but it is not as hardcore like those top competitors, ofcourse.

Heh. Those "highly choreographed and rehearsed" routines still involve a HELL OF A LOT of lead/follow—you can tell when a couple is just doing choreography as opposed to dancing a routine, because no performance is ever supposed to be the same.

Anyway, dance rocks. Go do it.

(Hi Lisa.)

^^Oh I'm not doubting the skill/technique involved at all. But when you spend half the dance not even in contact with one another, that seems to be getting away from the whole point of ballroom dancing.

DANCE STUDIO is located in charmichael gym...go in the entrance in which you go up the little ramp (not the one across from Talley but further down Cates Ave a bit..to the right..if you're looking at the gym). Then go down one flight of stairs and it's on the 2nd floor, where the track is..you'll see it to the right of the little work out room on the 2nd floor. Ok, I made it sound complicated to find thats not the case at all. Just ask people if you get lost hehe

I should correct something: I dont think actual lessons are on Wednesday and Friday nights as I've said, but thats when open studio hours are and you'll see some of the club/team members practicing in there. Its a good chance to meet us, ask questions, and even find a partner. Lessons are on various Sundays with our coaches, Wayne and Marie Crowder. Take a look at the schedule on the website for more info.

We're not as active over the summer ofcourse, so it's fine if you want to stop by, meet our club/team members and get an idea if you want to join for the fall. But ofcourse we welcome you any time... in fact, open studio hours are right now!

I watched Swingers and now would like to learn to swing dance (no homo).

Do you have to go both days?

Stein: you can come whenever you want, and no, none of us figured you were a homo b/c you're interested in dance. Again, no guy in our club/team is gay to my knowledge, though ofcourse we don't matter which way a person swings.

When I have some fucking time.

And money. I don't get a paycheck until next Friday which will include money I can actually afford to spend. I haven't forgotten about you guys, though—I've just been busy as hell the last few months.

I'm guessing you have to be able to get into the State gym to do this, which probably won't work for me now that I've graduated.

If you want to learn swing dancing but not ballroom, TSDS has free beginner lessons before their Saturday dances in Durham & Carrboro and CDC has free beginner lessons before their Sunday dances in North Raleigh.

Its not the toughness aspect, its the laziness and sheer boredom of the thing. I mean, sure, if I didn't suck and had a gorgeous chick dancing with me then it would be awesome. Starting out however, it won't be like that at all. I'd have to stumble through all these weird moves with probably a 500lb she-hulk while totally being conscious of the fact that faggoty bird men do it way better.

Heh...I love how the framerate on their videos on their website is too slow to actually show off Max and Yulia's (ESPECIALLY Yulia's...*drool*) moves. Go figure.

Can you find out what the deal is with getting someone in the gym that doesn't go to state. My friend and I are thinking about doing this with our boyfriends in the fall, but one of them doesn't go to school here.

We shall ask. I'm pretty sure you can get guests in if they're "with you" and you tell the guys at the desk that they're there for social dance.

If not, remind us and we'll have someone from the dance team escort you guys in. I've had to do that before so I could practice with a non-student partner.
