the fact that it shuts down cylinders is how it is able to get those awesome figures of 20something mpg[Edited on May 30, 2006 at 8:29 PM. Reason : idget]

there was an unmarked black one at the lot on blue ridge. they are also fielding Tahoes, but they are marked.

Guess this is their replacement for the B4C Camaro's they were using.Interesting that they both get pretty much the same fuel mileage. The Camaro even got 1 mpg better than the Charger does. Is it just the weight difference you think? I mean the Camaro weighed less and is more sleek, so you would think it would handle better. The Charger at least has a backseat though, so the officer doesn't have to wait for backup to arrive to take away guys he's arresting. But it has to make up for that difference in size by having a 5-speed auto instead of a 4-speed and having to cut off half the cylinders in most conditions. But it is able to be almost as fast (half a second longer to 60) and almost equal it in fuel mileage and still offer a lot more room, so in the end it probably will turn out to be a better car for standard NCHP use. In a highspeed chase though, I'd damn sure rather have the Z28 myself. [Edited on May 30, 2006 at 8:51 PM. Reason : ]

well it wont ever be getting 25mpgand 25mpg isnt fuel-efficient no matter how you cut it
5/30/2006 9:17:06 PM
it is when you drive a vehicle that averages 12.
5/30/2006 9:21:18 PM
granted, 25mpg is not fuel efficient, but you dont get a v8, or a car with high performance, be it a 4, 6, or 8 and retain good gas mileage.
5/30/2006 9:22:47 PM
yeah, and if they had not called it a fuel efficient car i would have just commented on it looking badassbut they did[Edited on May 30, 2006 at 9:23 PM. Reason : holy commas batman ]

From what I hear they are phasing out the vics...which get about 10 with the idling they do in them, hell i be the chargers only get 15 or so with all the time they will spend just sitting...
5/30/2006 9:31:52 PM
if so, then ford needs to step up the mpg on them, because I would say 80% of vic sales are cops.
5/30/2006 9:35:46 PM
theres no reason that every cop needs a large v8 powered car
5/30/2006 9:36:08 PM
^Bingo.Cops with vehicles that have high hp/weight ratios are just a bad idea. How many more speeders are they really going to catch with more power? As for the 'economy' of these models, give me a break, the 'shutting down' cylinders is not efficient at all, especially since those cylinders are still doing the work of pulling air in, compressing it, and pushing it back out, not to mention the valve train, and the pistons, and related drag (con rods, friction on crank, wristpins, etc). i'd say 360hp is probably needed especially with the way cars are going as far as power - hell the new camry v6 has just shy of 270hp
5/30/2006 10:36:05 PM
^^ ahahahahaCary PD has about 100 Priuses on order
5/30/2006 10:45:42 PM
I'd wave at the mofo's as I flew by in my fuel inefficient pushrod V8. What the fuck they gonna do, box you in with those shitboxes??The Prius I respect a slight bit more, but still this shit is crazy. They at least need like midsize vehicles ala Pontiac G6 or something along those lines. I think going to an Echo is a bit extreme and just stupid.I can hardly wait to see them try to pull people in those tincan Echo's on the beltline. Imagine crotch rocket on beltline vs. 50 Toyota Echos. Bike = winnar.

the crown vics are about 230 hp and get 18 mpg on the road.
5/30/2006 10:49:07 PM
they had an article in the N&O today about the new charger, had a breakdown of milage and HP of some of the cars being used as cruisers, the Crown Vic, Charger, Impala and PT Cruiser (used by holly springs SRO's)... was just a neat blurb... neat to see this rumor has come true... heard last year they were looking to the charger for patrol.I know that RPD uses crown vics pretty much exclusivley, most others in the area have other makes as well, Cary PD uses alot of Impalas, Holly Springs has just about everything including PT Cruisers, Escapes, Cherokee's. Apex has some Cherokee's, crown vics, impalas and even a Prowler. most others around have a good mix of crown vics and impalas. I know that WSO uses crown vics and durangos...It's just interesting to see what different LE agencies in the same area use for patrol vehicles.

Is it me or does comparing MPG for a vehicle that spends most of its time idling kind of pointless? Wouldn't a comparison of daily fuel consumption be better?

I just looked at something John H Guth, while 25mpg is not stellar, the dodge charger, ford mustang, and chevrolet corvette, and Chevrolet Impala including the 7.0L v8, all recieve better gas mileage than the v6 BMW m3 for 2005-2006 model years. I did not suggest cops drive M3s, I know you are a BMW advocate, so I was just informing you that the "god awful" gas mileage of the Chargers v8 actually beats that of everyone's favorite car.and I did google it, the only references are an article about a submachinegun holder in a 5-series security edition and all the BMW bikes the cops use. so lets say that they use a 5-series.Available engines and gas mileage:3.0L I6 variation 1: AWD- 27mpg RWD- 30 mpg3.0L I6 variation 2: AWD- 27 mpg RWD-29mpg4.8L v8: 25mpg[Edited on June 13, 2006 at 8:29 AM.
