What are everyone's thoughts on this car? Is Diesel a smart way to go?

I've got one. 50 mpg is very nice.

However if your main goal is to save money on gas, the premium you pay for a Jetta vs a corolla will take a long time to make up for.

If you take the cost differential of a Jetta TDI vs. a corolla ($3k-$5k) compared with the fuel cost savings (42 vs. ~50), the corolla will likely be cheaper. However, the Jetta is a much nicer car, so that may be a significant factor as well.

Actually, does the "new" jetta get the same economy as the previous generation? The new jetta is a bit bigger IIRC, so there might be a reduction in fuel economy as well.

^ Troo, but I bet you'll get most (if not all) of that $3-$5k back when you sell it on the used market. I doubt the TCO would be very different between the two cars and, like you said, the VW is a nicer car.

My main goal when looking for a car was not fuel efficiency. I just wanted a car that I liked and have always liked the Jetta. My brother then talked me into the diesel, not to mention he is getting me the car at invoice and from what I've heard from other dealers, they aren't knocking anything off this car anywhere else.

At first I wasn't sure about wanting a diesel engine but from what I've read its a good car.

if you want one go to the dealer tomorrow... they are not importing any more into the country till 08 i think because of the diesel change over. AVON just bought the last white one Crown could get a hold of. And another friend has one getting delivered today. You can't get many options at the moment and no good financing- so GO GET one now. on a note this new one kicks the old one's ass in way of performance, comfort and everything except economy.

I've got 2 TDI Jettas, a 2003 Wagon with 108K miles on it and a brand spanking new 2006 Sedan.
The new Jetta is SOOOO much nicer than my 2003. The interior is great and the power increase is incredible.

If you want one, you better hurry. TDIs will be unavailable in the USA until probably 2008-2009 due to new emission regulations.... fucking hippies. Be prepared to pay list if you want a new one.

We've got an 01 with a 5-spd; the performance is not great, but then again, you dont buy a TDI for performance, you buy them because the gas mileage is un-believable, it actually gets better mileage than a prius or something compareable, despite the hyrbid having higher advertised mileage. Its actually a nice car, I enjoy driving it, and if I want to go fast Ive got a fast car at home in the garage, no worries.

I know my car is not fast in the sense that it is not an 15 second street car, no shit, I dont have the money, the time, , the knowledge, nor the care to make it that, im not trying to be the fastest thing out there, but compared to most ordinary fuel economy hybrid cars, and especially the TDI, it is fast. It runs a low 18 second time, and the torque might push you back in the seat if I bounce off the rev limiter and dump the clutch, that all I care about, not having some shit that cost me $500 for the car and parts together and runs 15s or 14s, if you have a car that can, im glad for you, it must be fun, as for me, its just not that important.

As for the TDI, it's a great car, and very durable engine. One should consider the higher cost of diesel/gallon, however, and we shall see what happens to the prices of diesel, at least in the short term, as the new regulations start to take effect.

I give you three thumbs up; you stupid shit, I never said a mustang was "fast" but if you think a stock 94 gt runs a 17 or 18 second quarter mile, and will not push you back in the seat, you know less about anything related to cars than most people on here think I do. I dont have an ignorant attitude, just because I dont worship the ground that every tire mounted on a BMW touches. I will admit Ahmet, you know your stuff when it comes to cars, more technical knowledge than I or most on here do. I only brought up BMWs because I though nighthawk was another arrogant douce like scottyc just trying to talk shit because they are ignorant and think BMW is the zenith of automobiles. I was wrong, and I apologized, no big deal.
